Donnie Freeman was born in the Bahamas and moved to the DMV when he was six years old. As a junior, Freeman led his Washington (D.C.) St. John’s Collegiate to the championship game of the WCAC playoffs, widely thought of as one of the toughest high school leagues in the country. In the 2022-2023 season, Freeman averaged 21 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists. “I’m very versatile, athletic, can really do it all on the floor, but I’m still expanding my game,” Freeman told On3's Joe Tipton. “I’m an improved shooter. I’ve really been working on that. I want to get to be a better ball handler, too, which will separate me from other players in the country like me. I watch a lot of Paul George, how he is twitchy with his moves and Jayson Tatum with his footwork in the post.” Freeman also made an impact in the summer between his sophomore and junior seasons, starting for a Team Takeover squad that made it to the U17 championship game of Peach Jam.
