Jermaine Mathews earns 5th star from On3

Charles Power

Jermaine Mathews (No. 14) was the best 2023 corner we saw all year – on film and in person. Though Mathews was not at an All-American game, the Ohio State pledge did enough this fall to merit his rise to the No. 1 corner spot and earn five-star status. Mathews was dominant at LSU’s camp in June. He’s around 5-foot-11, with good length and ran 4.35 and 4.40 at two different college camps. What he showed over the summer carried over to Friday nights, where Mathews showed outstanding ball production (five interceptions) along with general playmaking ability as a defender (multiple forced fumbles) and return man.

Jermaine Mathews continues rise in On3 rankings

Ohio State cornerback commit Jermaine Mathews (No. 48) made a huge jump in July’s update after we watched him put together a sensational showing at LSU’s elite camp in June. The 5-foot-11.5, 175-pounder pairs good size, length and athleticism with advanced technical cover skills. He’s shown that ability so far this fall at Cincinnati Winton Woods and is making plays in coverage, run support and as a return man.

Jermaine Mathews a big riser in updated On300

Charles Power

Jermaine Mathews is a big riser in the updated On300, jumping from a high three-star prospect to No. 68 overall. On3 watched Mathews up close at LSU’s elite camp back in June. The Cincinnati Winton Woods cornerback turned in a phenomenal performance, showing impressive fluidity and ability to stay attached in coverage. Mathews also posted a sub 4.5 second 40-yard dash at around 5-foot-11.5, 175 pounds with 32 inch arms. The showing at LSU was par for the course for Mathews over the summer. He posted 44 tackles and five interceptions as a junior and could be in line for a big senior season if his camp showings are any indication.

Jermaine Mathews turns in stellar showing at LSU elite camp

Jermaine Mathews made a strong case for the most impressive showing on either day. The Cincinnati Winton Woods defensive back worked out on Thursday morning and was outstanding overall. Mathews measured at over 5-foot-11 and around 175 pounds with plus-length for the position. He tested well, turning in a few 40-yard dashes in the 4.4 second range. Mathews was an obvious standout in drill work, 1-on-1’s and 7-on-7. His physical traits transferred over to those live situations. He was fluid and controlled in coverage, effortlessly flipping his hips and effectively using his length. We saw Mathews give up very few completions, while making numerous plays on the ball. Simply put, he looked like a national cornerback prospect.
