As a College Recruit

Jumbo-sized quarterback who has one of the strongest arms in the 2023 cycle. Measured in close to 6-foot-7 and over 230 pounds with a 10-inch hand in the spring prior to his senior season. Drives the ball to the boundary on far hash throws as well as any top quarterback in the 2023 cycle. Able to generate considerable velocity on his throws. Turned in a good junior season, leading his team to a state title berth while throwing 25 touchdowns against four interceptions. Has good feet and movement skills for a bigger quarterback. Capable of extending plays and picking up first downs with his legs. Shows some creativity as a playmaker. Stands in the pocket and goes through his progressions. Has a lower carriage point and an over the top throwing motion. Quickened his release from his sophomore to junior seasons. A three-sport athlete who is capable of playing above the rim on the hardwood. Will need to keep his mechanics tight and maintain his foot quickness as a taller, bigger quarterback with longer arms. Turned in strong off-season showings at the Elite 11 and Future 50 prior to his senior season, showing an advanced feel and ability to process relative to some other top quarterbacks on hand.

JJ Kohl's arm strength, stature, and basketball background remind us a bit of Brock Osweiler. Like Osweiler, Kohl is a big, pocket passer at around 6-foot-7.

JJ Kohl a big riser in On300 after strong summer

Charles Power

Iowa State commit JJ Kohl (No. 36) is the biggest riser of quarterbacks within the On300. The 6-foot-6.5, 231-pounder had a stellar showing at the Elite 11 Finals en route to being named On3 MVP at the event. Kohl showed considerable arm talent in live situations with the ability to drive and layer throws to all levels. He was dominant in 7-on-7 at the Elite 11 Finals, going 13 for 16 for six touchdowns. Kohl confirmed what we saw at the Elite 11 over the weekend at Future 50. The Cyclone commit’s ability to process in these live settings is the best we’ve seen from quarterbacks throughout the summer.

JJ Kohl named On3 MVP after fantastic showing at Elite 11 Finals

Charles Power

JJ Kohl erased any doubts of who would earn On3 MVP honors at the Elite 11 Finals with his performance in 7-on-7 on Thursday. The Iowa State commit ended his sterling week with an emphatic showing, going 13 of 16 for six touchdowns and zero interceptions. It’s certainly on the shortlist of most dominant 7-on-7 sessions we’ve seen at the Elite 11 Finals over the years.

Kohl’s high-end physical gifts as a passer were readily evident on Day 1 and Day 2. He showed off arguably the biggest arm among the Elite 11 Finalists along with a nuanced ability to layer his throws with touch and placement. The arm talent transferred seamlessly to the live setting on Thursday. He absolutely carved up the secondary. No other quarterback took more aggressive downfield shots. Kohl had a four throw sequence comprised of three touchdowns and an absolute strike down the seam that nearly went for another score. He has a compact, quick motion and adjusted to the increased speed of play as well as any Finalist. We saw him quickly and naturally read leverage to find open receivers downfield.

There’s no question this was a breakout performance on a national stage for JJ Kohl. We knew the Ankeny (Iowa) High three-sport standout was a high-upside physical talent, but his passing skill set is further along than we could’ve hoped for. Kohl already ranks in the On300, but should be a lock to rise after a dominant week at the Elite 11 Finals.
