As a Recruit
Personal Life
Unlike many highly ranked basketball recruits that are household names by the time they enter high school, JP Estrella didn’t fall into that category. In fact, Estrella didn’t emerge until he grew eight inches since entering high school. While going through his growth spurt, he still viewed himself as a shooting big. But he said he refined his low-post game and has learned to play a more physical brand of basketball. “I had to switch the mentality up a little bit,” Estrella said. “I worked on all the post stuff. I think I am an elite post-player now.” During his junior season, Estrella led South Portland High School to the Class AA state title. Estrella averaged 20.2 points, 11.8 rebounds and 4.1 blocks in the regular season in the all-state campaign. Estrella transferred for his senior season to prep powerhouse Brewster Academy.
