As a College Recruit

Physical, aggressive receiver who excels at picking up yards after the catch. Dangerous in the open field due to a quick initial burst, change of direction skills and vision. Also shows a tendency to run through arm tackles. Does not have verified speed times, but showing a fast play speed as a senior. Able to use his initial burst to create separation off the line of scrimmage. Has natural hands, plucking the ball with his finger tips. Parlays the open field skill set to double as a big-play punt returner, taking several to the house in 2021. Was a top youth basketball player. Not as tall as listed elsewhere, measuring under 6-feet prior to his senior season.

Luther Burden has a strong case as the best receiver after the catch in the 2022 cycle. The Missouri signee is a threat to score any time he touches the ball, whether it’s on a catch-and-run, as a return man or in some other manner. Burden’s ability to make defenders miss and run through arm tackles reminds us of Deebo Samuel. Both also have similar stature at around 5-foot-11.5 with compact builds. Burden is actually heavier at the same stage, checking in around 200 pounds. The multi-purpose ability to go with being rock solid at traditional receiver skills makes both players unique talents and versatile weapons for offensive coaches.

Luther Burden a top performer at Under Armour All-America Game

Charles Power

Luther Burden approached the week with a business-like mindset. The Missouri signee was consistent on a daily basis, showing the ability to get open at all three levels. In the game, Burden showed his high-end ability after catch, scoring on a 65-yard catch and run on the first play from scrimmage. He also had a long punt return in the fourth quarter. Burden’s ability to read the leverage of defenders and work in the open field may be his best trait. He may not be the fastest or biggest wide receiver, but Burden has a well-rounded skill set and projects as an instant impact player at the college level.

Luther Burden scores on fake punt before ejection against IMG Academy

Charles Power

Luther Burden made a splash in a big game against IMG Academy. The 5-foot-11.5, 200 pound receiver doubles as East St. Louis' punter - he lined up for a punt in the first quarter, but faked the punt, taking the snap 55-yards to the house in an impressive display of play speed. Burden was later ejected from the game following an altercation on the last play of the first half.
