Reminds Us Of

Chris Jones
Chris Jones
DL / 6-6 / 308
Mississippi StateMississippi State · HS Class of 2013
Kansas City2016 Draft · Rnd 2 · Pick 37

We’ve thought Mykel Williams bears a strong resemblance to a high school Chris Jones for much of the cycle. Williams checks in at 6-foot-5, 260 pounds with an arm length over 34 inches. Jones is around one inch taller than Williams, but their frames look similar at the same stage. Jones was around 6-foot-6, 255 pounds as an On3 Consensus five-star prospect in the 2013 cycle. We would not be surprised to see Williams top out around 300 pounds after a few years in Georgia’s strength program. Williams is more technically advanced than Jones at the same stage, but both were devastating pass rushers at the high school level while projecting as interior disruptors in college and the NFL. Williams averaged 1.3 sacks per game over the course of his high school career. Jones tallied 160 tackles and 14 sacks as a senior. Both also turned in dominant all-star performances – Williams was the best player all week at the All-American Bowl, while Jones was a top performer at the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic and Under Armour All-America Game.

Mykel Williams Scouting Summary
Charles Power
10/26/21

High upside defensive lineman who is already an outstanding player at the high school level. Has a large frame with plus length (34-inch arms) and large hands (10 inches). Looks lean while carrying 265 pounds. Would not be surprising to see him carry 300 pounds with ease after time in a college strength program. A highly productive and disruptive player in high school for several seasons. Has advanced pass rush ability for a larger prospect. Uses first-step quickness to tee off against opposing offensive tackles. Pairs his high-end quickness with the length and a strong effort level to finish plays behind the line of scrimmage at a high rate. Among the more productive defensive linemen or EDGE prospects in 2022, posting double-digit sacks and at least 17 tackles for loss in all three varsity seasons. Is a younger prospect for the class and won’t turn 18 until the summer of 2022.

Personal Life

When asked what position he plays, Mykel Williams has to think for a second or two. "Defender," Williams said at the 2024 SEC Media Days. "Defender is the best way to describe what I do." The description fits, UGA coach Kirby Smart says because he can line up at EDGE or inside at defensive tackle or even drop back in coverage like a linebacker. “He’s really hard to block," Smart said ahead of the 2024 season. "He’s a dominant football player and he got better as the year went along last year. We need him to have a healthy camp to be as dominant as we think he can be.” The former five-star product of Columbus (Georgia) Hardaway was a second-team All-SEC pick in 2023 after racking up a team-leading 4.5 sacks. In 2022, he was a first-team Freshman All-American after racking up 31 quarterback hurries.
