Angel Reese clarifies, apologizes for comments about Chicago Sky teammates, organization

Following her comments in an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Angel Reese clarified her remarks after Wednesday’s game against the Connecticut Sun. In the interview, the Sky star forward appeared to voice her frustration with the organization and path forward after back-to-back rough years.
Reese said the quotes were taken out of context and she didn’t intend to call out her teammates. During the interview, she expressed her desire for the team to bring in more talented players and perhaps get younger at the point guard position.
When asked whether she’s frustrated with the organization, Reese said her frustration was more with herself and how the situation unfolded. She added she apologized to her teammates, as well.
“I don’t think I’m frustrated – I probably am frustrated with myself right now,” Reese said in her postgame press conference. “I think the language is taken out of context and I really didn’t intentionally mean to put down my teammates because they’ve been through this with me throughout the whole year. They’ve busted their ass just how I’ve busted my ass. They’ve shown up for me through thick and thin and in the locker room when nobody could see anything.
“I want to apologize to my teammates, which I already have. I thought the article and how it was misconstrued about what was said, I just have to be better with my language because I know it’s not the message, it’s the messenger and understanding what I say can be taken any kind of way. So I just have to really be better and grow from this.”

Reese’s comments came after Chicago got its largest victory of the season, defeating the Sun 88-64 at Wintrust Arena on Wednesday. She recorded another double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds while adding four assists and four steals. However, she also picked up her eighth technical foul, which would lead to a suspension for the next game against Indiana if the WNBA office says it stands.
In the meantime, the offseason is approaching, and the Sky are set to miss the playoffs once again. Wednesday’s game marked their 10th win of the season, though they’re still looking at a worse record than Angel Reese’s rookie season a year ago. During her conversation with the Tribune, the two-time All-Star said this would be an important offseason for the Sky franchise to get back to the top of the league.
“I’m not settling for the same s−−− we did this year,” Reese said. “We have to get good players. We have to get great players. That’s a non-negotiable for me.
“I’m willing and wanting to play with the best. And however I can help to get the best here, that’s what I’m going to do this offseason. So it’s going to be very, very important this offseason to make sure we attract the best of the best because we can’t settle for what we have this year.”
