During Chicago Sky media day this week, a reporter asked Angel Reese about her comments regarding TV viewership and Caitlin Clark. The second-year forward cut it off and didn’t answer.

The question referred to Reese’s comments about how the surge in women’s basketball’s popularity. TV viewership for Clark’s games, in particular, soared as she won WNBA Rookie of the Year with the Indiana Fever.

After a close game between the Sky and Fever, Reese told reporters the ratings success was “not just because of one person,” and she had a role, as well. When asked about those remarks before her second season in the W, the former LSU star opted not to answer, simply saying “next question.”

Reese’s comments in question came after the initial meeting between the Sky and Fever a year ago – a 71-70 Indiana victory. The matchup drew 2.25 million viewers on CBS to become the most-watched WNBA game ever until the very next week when the two teams averaged 2.3 million viewers on ESPN.

But after that first showdown, Reese said the growing popularity of the league wasn’t just because of Clark. She said she had a role in the growth, along with those who came before the rookie All-Stars.

“We’ve got celebrities coming to games, sold out arenas,” Reese said. “I’ll take the bad guy role and I’ll continue to take that on and be that for my teammates. I know I’ll go down in history. I’ll look back in 20 years and be like, the reason why we’re watching women’s basketball is not just because of one person. It’s because of me, too. I want y’all to realize that.”

During the 2024 WNBA season, networks set new viewership records in games featuring the Fever. The Sky vs. Fever game on CBS stood as its most-watched game of the year, while the Fever’s game against the Seattle Storm brought in 2.23 million viewers on ABC to set the high-water mark on that network. Indiana also played in the most-watched WNBA game ever on ESPN2 as 2.12 million tuned in against the Connecticut Sun.

That anticipation continues to grow this year. For Indiana’s preseason game at Iowa, 1.3 million people tuned in to ESPN to watch the Fever take on the Brazil national team. The regular season is now on the horizon as Indiana takes on Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky on Saturday to tip things off.
