The matchup of the Indiana Fever vs. the Dallas Wings tonight was highly anticipated, with it being the first meeting in the WNBA between Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers, the past two No. 1 picks after big-time collegiate careers. However, that matchup took a hit based on tonight’s injury report.

Per the Fever, Clark has been ruled out of the game tonight. That’s after she missed their home game last night against the Los Angeles Sparks following the team’s announcement that she was dealing with a left groin injury.

Clark hasn’t been unavailable much, if at all, over her college or professional career coming into this season. She has now missed seven games so far this year, though, with all relating to her left leg. She had a five-game absence dealing with a left quad injury around a month ago, with her now missing time with her groin following an MRI.

In nine games this season, Clark is averaging 18.2 points (39% FG, 29.5% 3PT on 2.6 makes), 8.9 assists, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game. The scoring total and shooting percentages are down a bit from last season, when she was WNBA Rookie of the Year as well as First Team All-WNBA. The Fever have also struggled without her, being 7-8 overall with them at 2-4 in the games she has missed, like the 85-75 loss last night to the Sparks.

Again, this was going to be a big event for the WNBA with Clark vs. Bueckers, with the game moved from College Park Center to American Airlines Center to accommodate the crowd. That’s with Bueckers is averaging 17.7 points (45.7% FG, 30.8% 3PT on 1.0 makes), 5.8 assists, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game through a dozen pro appearances for Dallas, with the Wings being 4-12.

The game was supposed to put two of the best women’s basketball players in the sport against one another, after they met three times in college at Iowa and Connecticut, respectively. Instead, fans will have to wait and see if it’ll happen when the two teams play again at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on July 13th.

DeWanna Bonner update: Indiana Fever waive star forward, sign Aari McDonald for rest of season

The Indiana Fever waived DeWanna Bonner, the franchise announced Wednesday. In a corresponding move, the Fever signed Aari McDonald for the rest of the season.

Bonner signed with the Fever this past offseason after five years with the Connecticut Sun. She arrived in Indianapolis as one of the most decorated players in the WNBA, winning two championships and making six All-Star Games during her time with the Sun and Phoenix Mercury. Bonner signed a one-year contract with the Fever this offseason as one of the team’s most notable additions. However, she missed the last five games due to what the team called personal reasons. Then, in a statement after Indiana waived her, Bonner said the situation simply “did not work out”, following reporting that she didn’t have interest in again playing for the Fever.

“I want to sincerely thank the Indiana Fever for the opportunity to be part of the Fever franchise,” Bonner said. “Despite our shared goals and excitement heading into the season, I felt the fit did not work out and I appreciate the organization’s willingness to grant my request to move on, particularly at this point in my career. I wish the Fever great success as they continue to build around this dynamic group of young players.”

Indiana then worked to find trade partners, but to no avail. That eventually led to the decision to waive Bonner after nine games, including three starts. During that time, she averaged 7.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.
