Kelsey Mitchell injury update: Fever, Aces delayed as teammates huddle around star, carry her off floor

Indiana Fever star Kelsey Mitchell was taken to the locker room during Tuesday evening’s Game 5 WNBA playoff semifinal against the Las Vegas Aces. The guard suffered what appeared a leg injury as she fell to the ground in the third quarter.
Mitchell’s teammates surrounded her as she remained on the floor for several moments. A stretcher was brought out, though Mitchell eventually was able to get up without it as trainers helped her to the locker room.
However, Mitchell was not able to put any weight on her left leg. ESPN’s Holly Rowe provided an update moments after, and later revealed that Mitchell had been ruled out for the remainder of the game.
“From what I can observe them working in that huddle with all those people gathered around, it’s the leg quad right above her knee,” Rowe said. “She could not put any weight on it as she’s moving back into the locker room. It also looked like maybe she was having some cramping in the right leg as well. So I think both legs are compromised.”
It’s unfortunate news for the Fever and Mitchell, who was in the midst of a career season. She finished fifth in the MVP voting after averaging 20.2 points and 3.4 assists while shooting 45.6% from the floor and 39.4% from 3-point range.

Kelsey Mitchell had stepped up in light of injuries to other Fever players this season, including star guard Caitlin Clark. In addition to Clark, guards Sophie Cunningham, Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald all suffered season-ending injuries as well.
Mitchell is in her eighth WNBA season, all of which have come with the Fever, who drafted her second overall out of Ohio State in 2018. The severity of the injury remains unknown as of this writing, and we’ll hope for the best when we get another update.
The Fever trailed 59-55 at the time of Mitchell’s injury, but managed to keep it close and it was tied at 86 with 22 seconds remaining. The Aces had a chance to put the game away, but Jackie Young‘s layup attempt missed as the game headed to overtime.
Unfortunately, forward Aliyah Boston fouled out with less than a minute remaining, so now the Fever must push forward without their top three players. We’ll see whether they can pull off a miracle for Mitchell in overtime.
