Sophie Cunningham injury update: Fever star reveals hilarious rehab situation

Sophie Cunningham didn’t want to leave her spot poolside to go to rehab on Tuesday. So instead, the Indiana Fever guard made the trainers come to her.
Cunningham, who suffered a torn MCL that put her out for the remainder of this season, posted a photo to her Instagram story of herself sitting by the pool. She didn’t seem to plan on moving either.
“You are looking at where I’m making our traininers do rehab with me today hahahah,” she wrote.
The injury to Cunningham occurred during an Aug. 17 game against the Connecticut Sun. Sun guard Bria Hartley crashed into Sophie Cunningham on a drive to the basket. Hartley seemingly fell onto the lower part of Cunningham’s leg, causing the Fever star to hobble away on one leg while clutching her injured knee.
“I was just in the paint trying to be help side,” Cunningham said on her podcast. “Someone ran into my knee and it just snapped. And knee injuries are weird to me. I don’t really like thinking about them, but I felt a pop right away.”

The former Missouri standout has been pivotal to the team’s success this season, averaging 8.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game while shooting 47.7% from the field and 44.3% from beyond the arc. Cunningham’s step up in production has been particularly important while Fever star Caitlin Clark has been sidelined.
Clark has missed 18 consecutive games with a right groin injury and is expected to miss her 19th straight when the Fever face the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday evening. Fever coach Stephanie White said Tuesday that the “hope” is that Clark will still return for the regular season. However, there is only a week left until then and Clark has still not gotten back to contact practices.
Indiana still sits in seventh place in the WNBA standings but could potentially still fall out of the playoffs in the next few games. Sophie Cunningham unfortunately won’t be able to help them get there, but she’ll be there supporting her teammates as they have also supported her in this time.
“I’m really in good spirits because I knew I hurt myself pretty good, but I will just say I’m thankful,” she said. “I know this is not probably the time to say this, but I’m just like thankful to be where I’m at and be with the organization and the girls that I’m with, because they’ve brought like life and my love of basketball back.”
