The week caught up to me, so I apologize for the brief hiatus of daily takeaways, but we’re back and it’s a good one.

1. West Virginia does the unthinkable

After six players were ejected following the second quarter, down to just five available bodies, West Virginia pulled off an improbable upset over No. 15 Duke, 57-49, on Friday night at the Greenbrier Tipoff in West Virginia.

“The grit, the perseverance and the toughness,” head coach Mark Kellogg told On3 of what impressed him most about his group’s efforts. “You see it in sports every once in a while when something happens and the team rallies and you start to believe.”

West Virginia is now undefeated with a 4-0 record, while Duke, who was No. 7 in the AP Preseason Poll, is now 2-2 with losses to Baylor and West Virginia.

2. Despite loss, UNLV looks strong

Despite falling just short, UNLV nearly pulled off an upset over a ranked Baylor squad. This is a team that’s grown to be one of the top mid-majors in the country, so it’s no surprise, but certainly notable.

The Lady Rebels fell 62-54 at home, but led by as many as eight points in the fourth quarter. Jazmyn Lott scored 18 points, while Meadow Roland added 13 points and 11 boards.
