2027 Nebraska QB commit Trae Taylor off to stellar start for Carmel Catholic (Ill.)

At the beginning of May, Nebraska landed a massive commitment from Trae Taylor, one of the top junior quarterback prospects in the nation. At the end of August, he began his 2025 season at Carmel Catholic (Ill.).
Through two games, Taylor is looking the part. The Corsairs have dominated their way to a 2-0 start, outscoring opponents 103-20.
In a season-opening 52-13 win over Grayslake Community Central, the 6-foot-3, 187-pounder threw for 207 yards and four touchdowns on just 12 completions. He also rushed for 49 yards, obviously not needing to play all four quarters.
Last week, Carmel Catholic went on the road and rolled Lake Forest — which beat the Corsairs in 2024 — 51-7. Taylor again threw for four scores, this time completing 19 passes for 301 yards. He also got more active on the feet, adding two more touchdowns on five rushes for 73 yards.
In addition to looking comfy in the pocket, Taylor continues to look elusive, making his dual-threat ability unstoppable for inferior competition. He’s already on pace to surpass his impressive sophomore numbers: 3,061 passing yards, 342 rushing yards, 24 total touchdowns to seven interceptions.
The Corsairs finished 5-7 last season but look to have elevated a few levels thus far this fall. They enter this week ranked as the No. 42 team in Illinois, per the Massey Ratings. Their first big test is en route this Friday as Providence Catholic, a top-40 team in the state, heads to Mundelein.
Taylor is the No. 97 overall prospect and No. 9 QB in the 2027 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 5 junior in Illinois.

He chose Matt Rhule and the Huskers on May 1, giving the Big Ten program its blue-chip signal-caller in the 2027 cycle. He was back in Lincoln over the weekend and is already operating as a recruiting beacon for Nebraska in the junior class.
“It was amazing being back in Lincoln as a commit,” Taylor told Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong. “I’m going to start with the fanbase. I know there are many great fanbases but Nebraska is on a whole different level. A huge group in the student section cheered for me to get my attention. I could go on for hours on how that fanbase has supported me. It just feels like home.”
He’s one of two commits in Nebraska’s 2027 class thus far, alongside Omaha Central four-star safety Tory Pittman, the No. 23 recruit and No. 2 safety in the cycle. The Huskers are already in the mix for other top junior blue-chippers this fall, too.
