Nation's No. 1 recruit Aaliyah Chavez sets commitment date

The country’s top women’s basketball recruit, Aaliyah Chavez, has set her commitment date, according to a report from OnTexasFootball.com’s Blake Munroe.
Chavez, who said Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, South Carolina and UCLA are her top schools, will decide on March 25, according to her father.
The 5-foot-9 guard from Lubbock (Texas) Monterey is the consensus No. 1 recruit in America and one of the most prolific scorers in the women’s high school basketball history. Earlier this month, she broke her own single-season scoring record for the Lady Plainsmen, and will likely finish her high school career with just shy of 5,000 career points.
Earlier this month, On3’s Talia Goodman reported that the Bruins were out of the running for Chavez and that her final decision would come down to the Longhorns, Red Raiders, Sooners and Gamecocks. Texas head coach Vic Schaefer attended one of her playoff games earlier this month, and UT will continue make a big push to keep its top recruiting target home over the next month.
Chavez wrapping up an historic high school career
Monterey advanced to the 5A Division 2 state title game on Tuesday night behind another stellar Chavez performance, and with one game left in her career she currently sits on 4,777 points. She has scored more than 1,400 of those this year (35.3 PPG) while leading Monterey to a 36-5 record and the brink on its first state title.

Her performance in the state playoffs has only added to her astounding career achievements. In Monterey’s five postseason games to this point, she’s averaging 31.4 points per contest, including games of 50 and 45 earlier in the playoffs. And she’s doing that while facing double- and triple-teams from every opponent.
On Tuesday night, she finished with one of her lowest scoring outputs of the season — 20 points — but hit a clutch 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter and another bucket in the final minute to give Monterey a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
In addition to being the state’s Gatorade girls basketball player of the year in 2023-24, she was also a finalist for the national award and will likely be again this year. Chavez is also set to play in the McDonald’s All-American Game on April 1 and the Nike Hoop Summit on April 12 in Portland.
