Bridgeport (W.V.) RB Gavin Williams sets school single-game rushing record

Bridgeport has emerged as the top high school football team in West Virginia once again this fall. On Friday, the Indians completed another undefeated regular season.
In a 62-28 thumping of Fairmont, a top-10 team in the state itself, Bridgeport leaned on its junior workhorse Gavin Williams. The running back made history in the win, breaking the school single-game rushing record by chugging for 411 yards, unofficially.
Williams needed just 20 carries to rack up that yardage. He also found the end zone five times as Bridgeport cruised. According to Connect-Bridgeport, the record was previously held by Landyn Reppert, who rushed for 318 yards in 2021.
The Indians have now won 24 games in a row. They won a state title in 2024, their first since 2019 and 11th in school history. It’ll take a herculean effort to deny them their 12th in the coming weeks, especially if Williams is toting the rock the way he did on Friday night.
The junior burner also kicks, punts and plays in the secondary on the gridiron. Last week in a 49-0 win over Grafton, Williams had four touchdowns, 124 rushing yards and went 7-7 on PATs. Entering Friday, he’d rushed for over 1,300 yards and 19 touchdowns. He does a little bit of everything and does it all well.

Bridgeport, ranked No. 1 in West Virginia by the Massey Ratings, averaged over 54 points per game this regular season. It scored at least 48 points in all but one game and hadn’t allowed more than two touchdowns in a game until Friday night. Fairmont managed to hang 21 points in the first quarter but was limited to just one more score the rest of the way.
The Indians now prepare for the playoffs, which are set to begin in a couple of weeks. Good luck dethroning the top-ranked team in the state as they seek back-to-back championships.
