Connecticut High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams - Oct. 21

The Connecticut high school football season is mixed with the public school play of the CIAC and private schools primarily competes out of the Founders League, with plenty of results already giving folks a clearer picture of the 2025 campaign as it reaches the midway point.

Taking the No. 1 team in this week’s Top 25 rankings out of the Constitution State once again is New Canaan, with private schools Avon Old Farms, St. Thomas More following at 2-3, respectively. Which other teams from around Connecticut high school football deserves to be in the discussion?

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

Here is the latest Connecticut high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Oct. 21.

1. New Canaan Rams

The defending Class L state champion Rams (5-0) haven’t looked too much different than they did a season ago as they’ve rolled to four dominating wins over Newtown, Ridgefield, Bunnell, St Joseph and. Danbury, respectively.

New Canaan has used a high-powered offense to cruise past the first few of opponents so far, with quarterback Maddox Hoffman throwing for 785 yards and seven touchdowns this fall.

The Rams are coming off a bye week as they square off against No. 4 Greenwich this Friday in a battle of undefeated teams.

2. Avon Old Farms Beavers

Avon Old Farms (6-0) opened up the Connecticut high school football season by avenging a loss to Brunswick School from last season and have set the tone for the rest of the campaign. The Beavers have a talented offense that’s averaging nearly 36 points per game, led by quarterback Matthew Baer, running back Kharon Craig, and offensive tackle Charlie Thom (Notre Dame commitment).

The Beavers return to action on Saturday when they take on undefeated Dexter School (6-0) of Massachusetts.

3. St. Thomas More Chancellors

St. Thomas More (1-1) sits at No. 3 in our latest Connecticut high school football rankings after they fell, 60-0, to nationally ranked St. Frances Academy, a couple weeks ago.

The Chancellors only losses from the 2024 season came against Maryland’s St. Frances Academy, New Jersey’s Hun School, and Florida’s IMG Academy. St. Thomas More will look to get back on track when they face The St. James Academy, Virginia’s No. 1 ranked team, on Friday night.

Among the players the Chancellors feature on their roster are four-star edge rusher Alhassan Iddrissu (UCF), cornerback Terron Johnson, running back Malichi Greaves, and linebacker Christian King.

4. Greenwich Cardinals

Coming off winning Connecticut’s Class LL state championship a year ago, the Greenwich Cardinals (5-0) looked like a bunch prepared to repeat after opening the season with a 31-14 win over Fairfield College Preparatory.

There’s new faces on both sides of the ball that are looking to make new names for themselves, with a new starting quarterback in Phil Tarantino, who threw for 506 yards and eight touchdowns in the opener. Senior running back Hector Lopez leads the ground game, rushing for 788 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Cardinals had a week off before returning to the gridiron this Friday against No. 1 New Canaan (5-0).

5. Killingly Trailblazers

The Killingly Trailblazers make their way into the Top 5 of this week’s Connecticut high school football rankings after a 42-7 shellacking of Masuk last week, knocking the Panthers out of the Top 25 altogether.

Fueling the Killingly offensive attack is the stellar play of senior running back Hayden Allard, who has rushed for nearly 900 yards and scored 13 touchdowns.

Next up for the Trailblazers is a Thursday night meeting against Fitch Senior (2-2).
