With the 2025 Virginia high school football season over, state champions will have bragging rights for an entire offseason. As the schedule closes, here’s how Massey ranked the state’s best teams.

The Massey Ratings system, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

1. The St. James Academy Strivers

The Strivers had a successful first season, finishing with an 8-1 record. As the St. James Academy program proceeds, they must say goodbye to graduating seniors WR Josiah Teasley (Maryland), WR Jayden Kitchens (Maryland), LB Josiah Perry (James Madison), S Matthew Holland (Richmond), EDGE Tristan Lux, and EDGE Marcus Ogbogu

2. Maury Commodores

While the Commodores saw their lengthy winning streak snapped, they finished strong by defeating Highland Springs for their third consecutive Virginia high school football Class 5 state championship. Maury started the game on the right note when Matt Williams returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. In their next drive, quarterback Domo Everette scored on a 42-yard rushing score to go up 13-0.

After their 25-7 victory against the Springers, the Commodores will say goodbye to graduating players Isaiah Simmons (Pittsburgh), WR Elijah Moss-Williams (James Madison), WR Jahvon Wiggins (William & Mary), S Hunter Collins, Jacoby Marshall, and Damon McDaniel Jr.

3. Varina Blue Devils

The Blue Devils closed the 2025 Virginia high school football season after defeating Loudoun County for the Class 4 state championship. After fumbling their first drive, Varina bounced back after DaMari Carter scored a rushing touchdown. In their next drive, Kaleb Wyche completed a passing TD to Trevon Rogers. Wyche connected with Shanundre Williams for another touchdown pass, while Michael Farley’s rushing score had the Blue Devils up 28-0.

After clinching the title via a 47-0 shutout, the Blue Devils will say goodbye to graduating players Carter (Virginia), RB SirPaul Cheeks (West Virginia), DL JaySean Richardson (Virginia), Farley, RB Darren Williams, LB Jayden Walker (North Carolina Central), and LB Braylon Hood (Furman)

4. Oscar Smith Tigers

Though the Tigers dropped their season opener, they went on a 13-game winning streak to cap off their campaign. Oscar Smith closed their schedule with a shutout victory over North Stafford in the Virginia high school football Class 6 state championship. After that title-clinching victory, the Tigers will part ways with graduating athletes WR Travis Johnson (Michigan), CB Jayden Covil (Virginia), LB Na’Rod Jarvis (Buffalo), WR Breon Dupree (North Carolina Central), IOL Dory Wilson (Old Dominion), WR Charles McGlown, and Dontrae Walls.

5. Benedictine Cadets

The Cadets’ season ended with a victory over Trinity Episcopal to claim the VISAA Division I state championship. This win avenged the earlier loss they had against the Titans. After completing an 11-1 season, Benedictine will part ways with graduating players Maddox Cochrane (Virginia Tech), WR Jojo Johnson (Purdue), LB JeJuan Hutchins, and LB Landon Snyder.
