The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) football state championships began last night down in Miami at Pitbull Stadium as Cardinal Mooney barreled their way past The Bolles School for the 2A crown. The state championships continue today with this afternoon’s Class 1A championship game will feature the Cardinal Newman Crusaders against the No. 16 nationally ranked Chaminade-Madonna Prep Lions, winners of four consecutive state titles and gunning for a fifth. We preview the second of seven FHSAA state championship games as teams begin being crowned as champions of their classifications.

Chaminade-Madonna Prep Players to Watch

RB Derrek Cooper: The future Texas Longhorn this season has rushed for 1,424 yards and 17 touchdowns on 152 carries as a senior. Cooper is the No. 74 overall prospect and No. 4 running back in the Rivals Industry Rankings.

WR Denairius GrayThe 6-foot-1, 170-pound Kentucky signee caught 22 passes for 316 yards and seven touchdowns in his senior season.

QB Malik Leonard: The freshman quarterback has been superb all season long for the Lions as the southpaw has completed 165 passes for 2,756 yards and 31 touchdowns.

WR Jasen Lopez: The four-star prospect is ranked as the No. 225 overall prospect in the country according to the Rivals Industry Rankings. Lopez has signed with Florida State and this season has caught 59 passes for 1,110 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Cardinal Newman Players to Watch

QB Jyron Hughley: The West Virginia signee is the engine that makes the Crusaders’ offense go as the dual-threat quarterback has accounted for 3,306 yards and 34 total touchdowns this season.

LB Adam Balogoun-Ali: Balogou-Ali has been the glue to the Crusaders’ defense as the future Auburn Tigers’ leads a very talented front seven. The senior has racked up 117 total tackles, 17 going for loss and three sacks.

OL Brayden Charney: Helping pave the way up front on the line of scrimmage is the 6-foot-6, 285-pound Syracuse signee. Charney has blocked for a Cardinal Newman offense that’s totaled over 5,000 yards and 67 touchdowns this season.

RB Phoenix Donghia: The senior running back pairs nicely with Hughley out of the backfield as Donghia has rushed for 1,379 yards on 179 touches and scored 23 touchdowns this season.
