Good Counsel (Md.) names new head football coach

One of Maryland’s top high school football programs has decided to make a change at the top.

According to a press release by the school, Good Counsel (Md.) announced on Monday the promotion of longtime assistant Sal Gorgone as the program’s new head football coach. Gorgone replaces Andy Stefanelli, which the official statement didn’t detail why the latter was being replaced as the head coach.

“I am very excited to lead the program at Good Counsel, which has a great tradition,” Gorgone via a press release. “My philosophy is to pursue athletic excellence, academic accountability, the development of young men’s character, and personal growth.”

Per the release, Gorgone has been an assistant at the school for 16 years, serving in multiple capacities in working his way up the ladder at Good Counsel. Gorgone started as the freshmen team’s linebackers coach for five seasons before being promoted to defensive coordinator. From there, Gorgone was moved up from freshmen defensive coordinator to junior varsity’s and then making the move to varsity. Since 2017, Gorgone has been the team’s defensive coordinator and associate head coach of the Falcons.

“We are pleased to announce that Coach Sal Gorgone has been named Head Football Coach at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School. Coach Gorgone has served the Good Counsel Football Program for sixteen years, progressing through every level and earning the trust of our student-athletes and families. His appointment reflects our commitment to continuity, excellence, and the long-term strength of Falcon Football.“

Good Counsel finished 6-5 this past 2025 Maryland high school football season playing up against some of the best teams in the DMV region.

The Falcons defeated Miami Columbus (Fla.) to start the season and then faced teams like DePaul Catholic (N.J.), St. Joseph’s Prep School (Pa.), The St. James Academy (Va.) and nationally ranked DeMatha Catholic (Md.).
