The top high school football game down in South Florida takes place over at Heritage Field when the No. 16 ranked American Heritage Patriots (1-0) host the Chaminade-Madonna Prep Lions (1-1). Last season’s meeting was a 48-39 victory for the Lions. Can the Patriots turn the tables tonight in Fort Lauderdale?

Lions to Watch

This Chaminade-Madonna group is not your high-flying, pass-heavy offensive attack. The Lions are more ground-oriented these days behind the running of Texas commit Derrek Cooper and junior standout Arwin Jackson.

RB Derrek Cooper: Cooper, a Texas Longhorn commitment, has rushed for 100 yards and on 22 carries so far this season. The Lions’ starting tailback is the No. 37 overall prospect and No. 2 running back in the Rivals Industry Rankings.

QB Malik Leonard: The freshman southpaw quarterback saw time in the first two games of the season and will certainly see snaps against one of the state’s best teams. Leonard along with Tyler Chance will need to be steady behind center for the Lions.

RB Arwin JacksonThe 5-foot-10, 170-pound running back is the Lions’ leading rusher right now with 212 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. Jackson and Cooper compliment each well out of the backfield and be relied upon this evening for the Lions.

WR Jasen Lopez: The four-star prospect is ranked as the No. 373 overall prospect in the country according to the Rivals Industry Rankings and has caught 11 passes for 139 yards this season. Lopez committed to Florida State in June over offers from programs such as Florida and Miami.

Patriots to Watch

American Heritage is one of three teams from the Sunshine State that is ranked inside the national Top 25 rankings and gets a chance to prove themselves against the 9-time state champion Chaminade-Madonna Lions.

QB Dia Bell: The five-star Texas commit opened the season with a 18 of 33, 218-yard performance to lead the Patriots past St. Joseph’s Prep (Pa.). Bell is ranked No. 4 overall and the No. 1 quarterback in his class.

RB Jonathan Bueno: Outside of the aforementioned Bell, Bueno was a crucial cog in American Heritage’s season opening win as the running back rushed for 94 yards and scored three touchdowns.

WR Brandon Bennett: The four-star prospect last season caught 24 passes for 509 yards and seven touchdowns. Bennett sustained a hamstring injury in the preseason and didn’t play against the Hawks, so tonight could mark the return of the Patriots’ speedster. He is committed to Florida State.

WR Jamar Denson: Of the star-studded wide receiving corps for American Heritage, its Denson who has been Mr. Reliable. Against St. Joseph’s Prep, the Troy commit caught 12 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown.
