Former Illinois high school football standout and current Good Morning Football host Kyle Brandt popularized the Angry Runs Scepter, an award given to the running back who manifested mind-blowing plays that often involved breaking multiple tackles or dragging some defenders while refusing to go down.

For the award’s latest edition, it became special for Brandt for two reasons. First, it was for Kyle Monangai of his hometown team, the Chicago Bears. Second, giving the former Rutgers RB the scepter is Brandt’s high school football coach.

In a video shared by Brandt on X, former Adlai Stevenson High School football coach Bill Mitz said to Monangai, “I’ve had some great running backs, and one that reminds me of you the way you went on Sunday was good ol’ number 40, Kyle Brandt. Here’s this award for you. God bless you and keep playing just like you do, with heart and toughness. Those angry runs you made on Sunday made an old Bears fan like me really proud.”

Mitz was Stevenson’s head coach from 1982-2010. He became the winningest football coach in school history, and compiled a 197-98 all-time record. Mitz guided the Bears to three state quarterfinals, one state semifinals, and one state runner-up finish. He is a member of the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the Stevenson Athletic Hall of Fame.

An emotional Brandt reacted, “Bill Mitz is one of the greatest high school football coaches in Illinois and the history of this planet if you asked me.” Brandt played for Mitz at Stevenson, and he deemed it a nice gesture to have his coach who lived across the Bears facility hand Monangai the scepter.

Brandt added, “I’m a little bit speechless. If you played high school football, you know that they have a special place in your heart if you love football.”

Meanwhile, Monangai received the Angry Runs scepter after tallying 26 carries for 176 yards in the Bears’ 47-42 Week 9 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
