It’s abundantly clear after three weeks that we’re in for a treat this season when it comes to high school football around the state of Louisiana.

Some significant upsets have already hit a few of the state’s top teams, and we’re sure to see more in the coming weeks. But more than that, the schedule really begins to ramp up after a few weeks of non-district play. This weekend alone, we’ll see five matchups between teams ranked in the state’s top 25, according to the Massey Ratings. And that doesn’t include a couple of big out-of-state matchups on the docket as well.

Heading into Week 4, here’s where the top teams in Louisiana stand:

1. Edna Karr Cougars (3-0)

A week after a last-minute nail-biter against American Heritage, one of Florida’s top teams, Edna Karr returned back to Louisiana for a matchup with McDonogh 35. This one had much less suspense, as the Cougars rolled to a 63–0 blowout Friday night. Karr led 42-0 by halftime, and the duo of running back  Trey Garrison and quarterback John Johnson ran roughshod over over the Roneagles’ defense.

2. Ruston Bearcats (3-0)

Through the first three weeks of the season, Ruston has only faced one in-state opponent: an opening weekend win over Acadiana. They followed that up by crushing Arkansas’ Cabot High before a meeting with top-25 Texas foe Longview on Friday night. The two teams also met last year, with Ruston pulling off a surprising 21-10 upset. Longview made this one interesting, but Ruston ultimately came away with a 38-35 victory to remain undefeated. Now they’ll welcome Midland Legacy, another Lone Star State foe, into town this weekend.

3. Baton Rouge Catholic Bears (3-0)

The Bears have opened the season with three-straight top-25 matchups against in-state opponents. And they keep passing each test, with the latest a 28-14 win over city rival University Lab. Catholic’s defense was suffocating for three quarters as it jumped out to a 28-0 lead. Offensively, they rushed 40 times for 224 yards, including junior running back Jayden Miles rushing for 113 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns. University Lab scored two late touchdowns to close the gap, but couldn’t come any closer.

4. Alexandria Trojans (4-0)

After outscoring its first three opponents 141-14, Alexandria got its first big challenge of the season on Friday against No. 21 Destrehan. Despite coming in 1-1, the Wildcats were a very formidable opponent that had already given B.R. Catholic a tough game in Week 1. Alexandria’s passing offense struggled mightily, but their run game took over. Running back Kason Williams carried 19 times for 116 yards, three rushing touchdowns and a TD reception.

5. John Curtis Patriots (2-0)

The Patriots ascend into the top-five after having the week off following big wins over Northshore and Cathedral to start the season. But the real fun begins this week, as they’ll close out the season with seven straight games against ranked opponents. First up is No. 10 Archbishop Rummel at home, with John Curtis looking for revenge after a 14-7 defeat last year.
