The Maryland high school football season is on its homestretch, with some teams competing in the playoffs. That said, here’s how Massey ranked the state’s best teams.

The Massey Ratings system, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

1. St. Frances Academy Panthers

The best team in Maryland high school football finished their season with a 8-1 record. St. Frances Academy’s only loss came against St. John Bosco and they have defeated teams like Chaminade-Madonna, St. Joseph’s Prep, and The First Academy.

2. DeMatha Catholic Stags

The Stags have won ten consecutive games after defeating St. John’s College. Now at 10-0, DeMatha Catholic will advance to the WCAC Capital finals against Gonzaga on November 23.

3. Archbishop Spalding Cavaliers

The Cavaliers won the Maryland high school football Class A championship via a 30-22 result against McDonogh School. Archbishop Spalding scored 13 fourth-quarter points to claim victory.

4. Good Counsel Falcons

The Falcons’ season ended with a loss to Gonzaga in the WCAC Capital bracket. Good Counsel finished their campaign with a 6-5 record, and earned victories against Columbus, DePaul Catholic, Middletown, St. Mary’s Ryken, St. John’s, and Bishop McNamara.

5. McDonogh School Eagles

The Eagles entered the Maryland high school football top five despite losing to Archbishop Spalding in the MIAA Class A finals. McDonogh School finished the season at 8-3 with victories over St. Mary’s, Loyola Blakefield, and Mount Saint Joseph.
