Maryville (Tenn.) names Kenny Cobble new head football coach
Maryville (Tenn.) football didn’t waste much time finding a new head coach.
It was reported on Monday that Derek Hunt was stepping down from his helm after spending the last nine seasons as the head coach of the Rebels. On Tuesday, the program announced that defensive coordinator Kenny Cobble has been named the 19th head coach in school history.
“Coach Cobble brings extensive coaching experience and a long-standing commitment to developing student athletes on and off the field,” Maryville wrote in a press release. “Coach Cobble has served on the Maryville football coaching staff as defensive coordinator, including working with the linebackers and other defensive units.”
Cobble has been on the Maryville staff since 2016. He was previously the head coach of Jefferson County in Dandridge, Tenn. from 2011-15. The Patriots went 24-29 under Cobble.
This past season, Maryville reached the third round of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Class 6A, Division I playoffs, falling to Blackman, 31-7. The Rebels finished the 2025 season with a record of 11-2 and ranked as the No. 13 team in the state, per the Massey Ratings.
Under Hunt, Maryville was dominant. Across the last nine seasons, the Rebels went 106-18 and won a pair of state championships in 2017 and 2019. Hunt released a statement to the Knoxville News Sentinel detailing his decision to step down:

“I won’t be coaching football for the Rebels next season,” Hunt said. “As much as I love being around our coaches and players, I’ve got a team at home that needs their coach now more than ever. I look forward to being a more present father, husband and son.”
“I’ve loved working for all our administrators, ADs and Director Mike Winstead. Our coaches, players, teachers and fans are incredible. I will miss you all to death. I will always be Maryville’s biggest fan, and the football program’s future is extremely bright.”
