Massachusetts High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams - Sep. 16

New England always gets going a little bit later when it comes to kicking off on the gridiron, but the Massachusetts high school football is fully underway as fans are getting a better look at who the best in the state are.
Several of Massachusetts’ top high school football programs, including Catholic Memorial and Xaverian Brothers, who is coming off winning a 12th Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) state title last December, have looked solid in the opening weeks. There’s a new No. 1 as Tabor Academy tops this week’s rankings, but who else joins them heading into Week 3?
The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.
Here is the latest Massachusetts high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Sep. 16.
1. Tabor Academy Seawolves
Skyrocketing their way 12 spots to the No. 1 spot is the Tabor Academy Seawolves, whom feature one of the state’s most talented rosters bar none. The Seawolves have a bevy of Division I talent, which includes players like junior quarterback Peter Bourque (Michigan commit), Amahn Williams (UCF commit) and a pair of UCLA defensive linemen commitments in Carter Gooden and Marcus Almada, respectively. Tabor Academy was impressive in last week’s 37-6 rout of The Williston Northampton School. This week the Seawolves take on The Governors Academy.
2. Catholic Memorial Knights
Always in the mix when it comes to the MIAA’s Division 2 classification, the Knights are loaded with Power 4 talent that’ll be headed to Boston College after their time at Catholic Memorial. Among the Boston College commitments are 2026 three-star linemen Marcelino Antunes, Mac Fitzgerald, 2027 safety Jackson Tucker and 2028 athlete Ramar Thomas. Catholic Memorial have opened up the 2025 season with a strong 35-7 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas (N.J.) nearly two weeks ago. The Knights are coming off a bye week and face St. Francis (N.Y.) this Saturday.

3. St. John’s Preparatory School Eagles
Having one of the best sophomore quarterbacks in the country definitely helps your odds of being ranked a bit higher when it pertains to teams out of New England. For the Eagles, they have a talented young signal caller in sophomore Christopher Vargas, who is coming off a solid freshman campaign. Vargas last season threw for 1,311 yards, 17 touchdowns and only three mere interceptions. St. John’s Prep began the 2025 campaign in dramatic fashion as they narrowly got by Springfield Central in a 36-35 shootout. The Eagles will aim to go 3-0 on the season when they face off against No. 20 Central Catholic this week.
4. Buckingham Browne & Nichols School Knights
Though the Knights have yet to play a game as of yet, their ranking comes with the multitude of future Division I players that are on the roster. The Knights have several future Ivy League players on the team, including offensive tackle Tim Church (Dartmouth commit) and linebacker Sam Kelley (Brown commit. Buckingham Browne & Nichols School is set to finally take the field this week on the road when they face Trinity Pawling.
5. King Phillip Regional Warriors
Remaining in the Top 5 after impressive victories in the first couple of weeks is King Phillip Regional as they opened up the season with a convincing 21-0 victory over No. 19 Walpole and then followed it up with a 21-7 win against North Attleboro. The Warriors are coming off another strong season in the MIAA’s Division II classification, in which they went 12-1 and reached the state championship game, losing to Catholic Memorial. With an advantageous schedule that mimics last year’s, the road back to the title game looks clear once again for the Warriors.
