The high school football season kicked off in Michigan last week, and many of the top programs in the Great Lakes State were in action. Plenty of interesting results followed. Hudsonville beat Byron Center in a matchup of state runners-up, Cass Tech recorded a massive comeback victory and Adams rode a perfect quarterback performance to rout of Romeo.

Another jam-packed slate is on deck as teams continue their quests for a state title. Below are the top 25 Michigan high school football teams, according to the Massey Ratings, as of Sept. 1.

1. Detroit Catholic Central (1-0)

The Shamrocks demolished Chippewa Valley on Friday, 41-7. Michigan State receiver commit Samson Gash put on a show, with a touchdown reception and a punt return for a score. Up next for Detroit Catholic Central is a matchup against Ohio’s Central Catholic on Friday.

2. Hudsonville (1-0)

In a matchup of state runners-up from a year ago, the Eagles emerged victorious in a back-and-forth affair over No. 22 Byron Center, 27-21. Hudsonville will continue its season this week against East Lansing.

3. Cass Tech (1-0)

The Technicians stormed back from a 20-point deficit to edge out Ohio’s Central Catholic, 28-27, at the Prep Kickoff Classic last week. Quarterback Donald Tabron II threw touchdown passes to William Sykes, Jr. and CJ Sadler in the victory. Next up for Cass Tech is a date against No. 6 Grandville.

4. Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep (1-0)

The Eaglets, the defending Div. II state champions, demolished Portage Northern on Thursday, 41-0. Orchard Lake St. Mary’s quarterback Jabin Gonzales was surgical, throwing touchdowns to four separate players as the team built a lead and then cruised to the finish line. The Eaglets will face Ohio’s St. John’s Jesuit on Friday.

5. Clarkston (1-0)

The Wolves took care of Belleville on Thursday, 38-7. Clarkston was just 29 seconds away from a shutout, but the Tigers connected on a 37-yard touchdown pass to avoid their first goose egg since 2016. Next up for the Wolves is a matchup against Harper Woods.

6. Grandville (1-0)

The Bulldogs outlasted Muskegon on Thursday, 44-40, thanks in large part to the legs of running back Jayden Terry. The 5-foot-8, 175-pound standout rushed for 273 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the win. Grandville will take on Cass Tech on Friday in what is shaping up to be the biggest Michigan high school football game of the week.

7. Unity Christian (1-0)

The Crusaders were all over Whitehall Senior from the beginning last Thursday, posting a 55-14 decision that could have been much worse. Unity Christian led 40-14 at the halftime break. Next up for the Crusaders is a matchup against Schoolcraft.

8. Adams (1-0)

The Highlanders faced little resistance in their 39-7 win over Romeo. Quarterback Ryland Watters connected on all five of his passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns in the victory, while running back Lorenzo Sartor rushed for 118 yards. Adams will face off against Rochester this Friday, hoping to extend its 28-game winning streak over its crosstown rival.

9. Saline (1-0)

The Hornets emerged victorious from an entertaining back-and-forth battle with Rockford last week. Saline quarterback Tommy Carr completed 17-of-28 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns; he also rushed for a score. Next Friday the Hornets will take on Skyline.

10. Zeeland West (1-0)

The reigning Div. III Michigan high school football state champions easily dispatched Old Redford Academy on Friday and logged their 10th-straight victory dating back to last season. Zeeland West will put that streak on the line later this week against West Ottawa.
