Michigan High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams - Sept. 8

The high school football season kicked off in Michigan last week, and many of the top programs in the Great Lakes State were in action. Plenty of interesting results followed. Detroit Catholic Central scored an upset in their CSHL opener, Cass Tech escaped with a win thanks to a mouthpiece penalty and Rockford rallied from a three-score deficit.
Another jam-packed slate is on deck as teams continue their quests for a state title. Below are the top 25 Michigan high school football teams, according to the Massey Ratings, as of Sept. 8.
1. Detroit Catholic Central (2-0)
The Shamrocks scored an upset win over Toledo’s Central Catholic in their CSHL opener Friday, 27-14. Detroit Catholic Central trailed at the break but scored 20-unanswered points to secure the win. Running back Cam Swearingen was a big part of the victory with three total touchdowns. The Shamrocks’ season continues this Friday against Canada’s Clarkson North.
2. Hudsonville (2-0)
It was all Hudsonville Friday in its 37-6 victory over East Lansing. The Trojans’ only score of the game came on a busted play in the first half. Next up for Hudsonville is a matchup against No. 24 Caledonia.
3. Cass Tech (2-0)
A week after rallying from a 20-point deficit to defeat Ohio’s Central Catholic, the Technicians escaped with a win Friday over Grandville thanks in part to to the Bulldogs’ kicker being flagged for not wearing his mouthpiece. Cass Tech‘s undefeated season rolls on this Thursday against 0-2 Renaissance.
4. Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep (2-0)
The Eaglets, the defending Div. II state champions, demolished St. John’s Jesuit on Friday, 42-10. The game was tied 7-7 early, but Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep closed the game on a 35-3 run. Next up for the Eaglets is a tough test against No. 18 De La Salle Collegiate.
5. Davison (2-0)
Davison survived a scare against No. 18 De La Salle Collegiate on Friday, 23-21. The Pilots successfully converted an onside kick late in the fourth quarter but missed a go-ahead field goal with 1:14 left to play. Davison will take on Central this Friday.
6. Adams (2-0)
Adams now owns a 29-game winning streak over crosstown rival Rochester after beating the Falcons on Friday, 31-3. The Highlanders’ next foe, No. 10 West Bloomfield, will offer a much tougher test this week. This may be the most competitive Michigan high school football game of the entire weekend.
7. East Kentwood (2-0)
East Kentwood erupted for a 43-14 win over Byron Center on Friday, securing the program’s first 2-0 start since 2017. The Falcons led 21-0 at halftime and kept their foot on the gas in the second half. Quarterback Kayd Coffman completed 17-of-24 passes for 299 yards and three scores in the win. East Kentwood will push for a 3-0 start this Friday against Jenison.
8. Saline (2-0)
The Hornets dominated Skyline from the jump on Friday night, racing to a 43-0 halftime lead and finishing 50-0. Saline quarterback Tommy Carr threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in the rout. Next up for the Hornets is a date against Pioneer on Friday.

9. Rockford (1-1)
Rockford bounced back from its season-opening loss to Saline with a gritty, come-from-behind win over Muskegon on Friday. The Rams trailed 20-3 at the halftime break but rallied to win 30-26. Rockford’s season continues this Friday against Grand Haven.
10. West Bloomfield (2-0)
Make it back-to-back 37-0 wins to start out the season for West Bloomfield. First against Fordson, then against Southfield on Friday. The Lakers have a much tougher test on the docket this week as they’ll face No. 6 Adams.
