A New York high school football team forfeited two games after some of their players were deemed ineligible due to failing grades.

In a report by the New York Post’s Nicole Rosenthal, Midwood High School forfeited their October 25 game against James Madison and November 1 game versus John Adams. The reversal of these wins dropped their record from 4-4 to 2-6. While they forfeited some games, their record is still better than their 1-7 mark last season. Midwood last’s winning record came in 2022-23 at 8-3.

According to the New York Public Schools Athletic League Eligibility Rules and Regulations, “A student-athlete must achieve a minimum GPA of 65 on their most recent report card or transcript.” Likewise, they must have an attendance record of at least 90% to be allowed to work.

Furthermore, the PSAL regulations state, “Academic eligibility, at the beginning of each term, is determined by the previous term’s final grades. Grades earned in summer school shall be counted as grades for the previous June.  A passing summer school grade must be used in calculating the June GPA requirement.”

With more than a dozen upperclassmen deemed ineligible to play, Midwood’s roster went below the minimum required 18 eligible players per game. After those players went inactive, Midwood added underclassmen to their New York high school football roster.

It’s a depressing development for a team that won two PSAL B Division Championships, five regional titles, and four city crowns.
