The high school football season continued in North Carolina last week, as many of the top programs in the Tar Heel State were in action. Plenty of interesting results followed.

Another jam-packed slate is on deck as teams continue their quests for a state title. Below are the top 25 North Carolina high school football teams, according to the Massey Ratings, as of Sept. 23.

1. William Amos Hough Huskies

The best team in North Carolina high school football continued their perfect start after a 53-15 victory over New Bern. Ethan Royal led the William Amos Hough offense, finishing with 305 passing yards, 27 rushing yards, and five touchdowns (four rushing). Jamarion Morrison added 87 rushing yards, 77 receiving yards, and two TDs. Meanwhile, Jahmere Anderson collected 104 receiving yards and a TD. The Huskies defense generated five tackles for losses and three interceptions. Hough will host West Mecklenburg on September 26.

2. Providence Day School Chargers

The Chargers remain flawless through five games. In their 55-34 victory against Georgia’s Rabun Gap-Nacoochee, Zaid Lott threw for 338 passing yards, rushed for 145 more, and had a hand in eight touchdowns (split evenly between passing and rushing). Lott’s big day enabled Gordon Sellars to finish with 97 receiving yards and three touchdowns, and Steele Fletcher to have 128 receiving yards and a TD. Providence Day will face Cannon School on the 26th.

3. Grimsley Whirlies

The defending Class 4A state champions crushed Southwest Guilford 65-0. In addition to remaining undefeated, it’s also Grimsley’s first shutout victory this season. More impressively, the Whirlies extended their winning streak to 20 games. They can get their 21st consecutive win if they can defeat Western Guilford at home on the 26th.

4. Weddington Warriors

The Warriors extended their winning streak to three games after defeating Charlotte Catholic 42-7. Weddington scored all their points in the first half, putting the game out of reach. Likewise, they would have blanked the Cougars if not for a consolation fourth-quarter touchdown. The Warriors’ 2025 North Carolina high school football season continues with a September 26 home game against Sun Valley.

5. Mallard Creek Mavericks

The Mavericks have earned back-to-back victories after defeating Cardinal Gibbons 20-16. Cailen Napier had 132 passing yards and a touchdown, while Joshua Person added 98 rushing yards. Khalil Price finished with 92 receiving yards and a TD. Mallard Creek proceeds with their home game against West Charlotte on September 26.

6. Myers Park Mustangs

After losing to Mallard Creek, the Mustangs are back in the win column after defeating Charlotte Christian 24-6. Josh Falzarano Jr. had 116 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Brody Keefe added 67 receiving yards and a touchdown. Myers Park has four victories in five games, and they can add one more by defeating Garinger on October 5.

7. Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders

While the Crusaders lost to Mallard Creek, some players still deserve some credit. Quarterback Conner Lindsey and wide receiver Connor McGeehan connected on a touchdown pass, while Noah Terry added 70 rushing yards and a touchdown. As they continue the 2025 North Carolina high school football season, Cardinal Gibbons can bounce back from this loss by earning a victory against Ambassador Christian on October 3.

8. Cleveland Rams

The Rams remain undefeated through four games, dominating New Bern 46-6. Owen Hulbert threw for 150 passing yards and four touchdowns, two of which were caught by Jaden Tibbs. Porter Bennett (90 yards, one touchdown) and Kaleb Ferrell (88 yards) anchored Cleveland’s ground game. On defense, Jaylen King was a monster, tallying 14 tackles, including four sacks. The Rams can improve to 5-0 if they emerge victorious against South Garner on September 26.

9. West Charlotte Lions

The Lions manifested a loud roar during their 55-0 shutout victory over West Mecklenburg. Quarterback Jamouri Nichols threw for two touchdowns and rushed for two more. Donte Nicholson contributed 102 receiving yards and two touchdowns, while Sincere Gray added two rushing touchdowns. West Charlotte can earn its third consecutive victory by defeating Mallard Creek on the 26th.

10. Mooresville Blue Devils

The Blue Devils are back on the winning track after a 42-14 victory over East Forsyth. Mooresville’s record for the 2025 North Carolina high school football season improves to 3-2 and they can add another win as they face South Iredell on October 3.
