The Texas high school football season had its most exciting week of the season when the state saw two nationally ranked programs get knocked off. That made for some exciting action not only on the gridiron, but also when it comes to the Lone Star State high school football Top 25 rankings.

Duncanville and North Crowley were both defeated, leaving undefeated Southlake Carroll all alone at the No. 1 spot. So which other Lone Star State programs got to take advantage and move up the rankings?

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

Here is the latest Texas high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Sep. 21.

1. Southlake Carroll Dragons

There’s a new No. 1 in the Lone Star State and it’s the Southlake Carroll Dragons. The Dragons have been by far the most consistent team in Texas high school football season and last week’s 44-6 beatdown of a previously undefeated Trinity team validated that.

The Dragons (4-0) started the 2025 season off with a bang when they cruised to a 49-0 rout of Midland and followed it up with a 35-7 thrashing of Hebron. Southlake Carroll’s latest victory was a 52-3 thrashing of Byron Nelson a couple weeks ago.

Pittsburgh commit Angelo Renda and his favorite target, Ohio State pledge Brock Boyd, who hauled in 111 passes for 1,868 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2024, remain the state’s top quarterback-wide receiver tandem. Renda through two outings has thrown for 885 yards and eight touchdowns.

This week the undefeated Dragons face a winless Timber Creek team this upcoming Friday. It’s Southlake Carroll’s first chance to show folks where they are at as the state’s No. 1 team.

2. Allen Eagles

With Duncanville going down, five-time UIL state champion Allen Eagles (4-0) are your new No. 2 team in the state of Texas.

The Eagles have been dominant through four games as they opened with a 46-13 victory over Midland Legacy, breezed by Cedar Hill, 38-0 and then thumped Rock Hill in a 70-14 rout. This past week Allen cruised past Plano in a 55-0 romp.

Allen will take on McKinney this week and this group will continue to be heavily favored in the coming weeks until a October meeting with No. 6 Prosper.

The Eagles saw the Week 1 debut of freshman quarterback Ty Snell with the team after the passer transferred from Lipscomb Academy during the offseason. Snell completed 9 of 11 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown in the win over Midland Legacy.

Senior Jeremiah Daoud has taken the bulk of the snaps behind center for the Eagles, with the quarterback throwing for 325 yards and four touchdowns.

3. Waxahachie Indians

Well look who makes their debut after pulling off what could be labeled as arguably the biggest upset of them all. The Waxahachie Indians step into the Top 5 of the ranks after upsetting previous No. 2 Duncanville, 28-27.

The Indians did so behind a strong ground attack and just enough defense to stop the Panthers when they needed to. Don’t think this is all just an admiration as Waxahachie has an abundance of talent up and down the roster.

There’s no rest for the weary when you make a statement like the Indians did last week as they will take on No. 15 DeSoto (2-2) this week.

4. Aledo Bearcats

Despite last year’s starter Gavin Beard transferring to All Saints Episcopal, which opened the door for Nash McElree to emerge as the team’s QB1, and the Aledo Bearcats (4-0) have looked just fine in the first few weeks of play.

McElree hasn’t had to do much as the team has leaned on their ground game, which rushed for over 200 yards and three touchdowns on the ground back in Week 1. Aledo took care of business the following week against a solid Lancaster squad, coming away with the 18-0 win then dispatched Brewer, 54-7, and last week destroyed Birdville in a 56-7 rout.

Up next for Aledo is a home matchup with Fossil Ridge on Friday night.

5. North Crowley Panthers

Oh how the mighty have fallen. North Crowley (3-1) went week after week of narrowly coming away with a victory in the first three weeks. All of that ended last week on Thursday night when they got stunned by Rockwall in a 37-35 decision that came down to the final play.

What head coach Ray Gates and his staff have to figure out is how they will get the team refocused after a loss for the first time since 2023. North Crowley still keeps its sights set on winning the UIL Class 6A, Division I state championship this fall.

The Panthers still feature what has to still be considered one of the more talented defensive secondaries in the Lone Star State, which includes players like Texas Tech commit Aaron Bradshaw, three-star safety Elijajuan Houston, four-star cornerback Jerry Outhouse and Colorado State commit Thomas Cook

The Panthers look to get back on track this week as they take on Mansfield Legacy on Friday night.
