SMU signee Xzavier Barnett had one of the wilder touchdown runs you’ll ever see in a high school football state championship game.

In Yoakum‘s 45-29 victory over Grandview for the UIL Class 3A, Division I state title, the future Mustang scored on a 30-yard scamper and did so with just one cleat on. And he nearly had to run 20 yards with just the one cleat as well.

Barnett gets the hand off with Yoakum up 24-7 over Grandview at the 8:49 mark of the third quarter, and while the receiver is running, his cleat flies off just before the 15-yard line before finishing off the run for a touchdown.

Barnett finished as the player of the game as the wide receiver total 200 all-purpose yards and tying a Texas high school football state championship record five touchdowns in the victory over Grandview.

The SMU signee’s final stat line saw Barnett carry the rock 17 times for 193 yards the five scores, which matched a UIL record for touchdowns in a state title contest. Barnett was all over the field for Yoakum, especially on the defensive side of the ball, with the senior totaling five tackles, one for a loss and recovering two onside kicks for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs finish the 2025 Texas high school football season with a 14-2 record and the state’s 3A, Division I title in hand.
