As the Virginia high school football season approaches, excitement and anticipation are in the air. Teams across the state have been training tirelessly, with the goal of making their mark on the field and rising to the top. From powerhouse programs with a legacy of success to up-and-coming squads ready to challenge the status quo, here are the top 25 Virginia high school football teams according to Massey.

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

1. Maury Commodores

The Commodores completed their second consecutive undefeated season by dominating Briar Woods in the Virginia high school football Class 5 state championship game. What is more impressive is that they have lost only four games in the last four seasons.

Maury hopes to prolong their 30-game winning streak when they open the 2025 season against North Carolina’s Cardinal Gibbons on Aug. 29. They are favorites to win it all again this year due to a stacked roster featuring wide receiver Jahvon Wiggins. Likewise, Elijah Moss-Williams and Isaiah Simmons are some of their notable players.

2. Oscar Smith Tigers

From winning 17 games in 2022 and 2023 combined, the Tigers finished a 15-0 season last year to capture the Class 6 state championship against James Madison. The Warhawks gave everything Oscar Smith can handle but they still won by one point.

Defending the title will be the Tigers’ priority, and their 2025 campaign starts with a road game against Gonzaga University High School on Aug. 29. Quarterback Lonnie Andrews will be in command of an offense that also features four-star wide receiver Travis Johnson, and running back Ty’Jae Curtis.

On defense, Oscar Smith will rely on three-star cornerback Jayden Covil, safety Jacoby Marshall, and linebacker Na’Rod Jarvis.

3. Phoebus Phantoms

The Phantoms are the defending Virginia high school football Class 4 state champions after finishing a 14-0 season. They have been undefeated over the last three seasons and have an active 49-game winning streak.

Phoebus is looking to extend their streak and claim another state title. In achieving that goal, they will need big years from quarterback Maurikus Banks and wide receiver Jayden Marbury

4. Highland Springs Springers

It was a roller coaster ride for the Springers last season. While Highland Springs had winning streaks of five and three games, they also suffered some defeats, including their Class 6 regional finals exit against Oscar Smith.

The Springers are looking to bounce back, starting in their Aug. 28 matchup versus Hopewell. Keep an eye on athlete Devlin Davis and running back Eric Byrd as they dominate on the field for Highland Springs.

5. Liberty Christian Academy Bulldogs

The Bulldogs are on a 28-game winning streak after completing two undefeated seasons. They edged Kettle Run for the Virginia high school football Class 3 state championship. In 2025, Liberty Christian Academy’s title defense starts against Ohio’s Ironton on Aug. 30.
