A thought on Golding's defense tonight vs. Green

Over 400 yards of total offense by Taylen Green alone later and Pete Golding's defense is licking its wounds a bit, but I will caution, this defense is going to have its moments against dual-threat QBs. Watching Pete's defenses even back to the Bama days, that was when they struggled it seemed like the most. Green is a unique player that presents tons of challenges. Ole Miss didn't handle tonight well, but IMO the next dual-threat threat is Mateer for the most part that'll really challenge them like that. Something to keep in mind. A ton to clean up and I'm mostly concerned about tackling, but dual-threats have been doing this for a bit to Golding defenses.

Several times it looked like Perkins bit on Green's hand off to the RB when Green kept it himself. I know Green fooled me.

Our defensive ends did a little better job in the second half staying home. The first half, they lost contain and got burned over and over again. JMO

They completely misplayed the read option. The DE is supposed to contain and force the handoff to the RB. The whole first half we crashed down to the RB and gave Green wide open lanes. All our ends had to do was sit down and make him hand it off inside. Not saying they wouldn’t get yards, but they likely wouldn’t have gashed us over and over like they did.

Pete has got to find a way for his defense to start stronger. He is great with the adjustments but having to score every possession in the first half is no way to live.

I think every defense struggles with dual threat guys who are actually good and are real dual threats

We need to upgrade the DE position. I like Landon Barnes in this class. Hopefully they can find another good one.

I think all would agree that a Bobby Petrino-coached offense is going to give a number of teams some trouble. In all of the ax-swinging at the defense tonight, one stat seems to have gotten lost: Our defense held Arkansas to just 7 points in the entire 2nd half.

I don’t think we’ll see a better QB this regular season and it might not be close.

It doesn’t help when you aren’t aligned, I can count atleast 50 yards where we were not even lined up

Petrino had too many options to pick from tonight. He had a great game plan

We get another chance next week. The Tulane QB is a serious dual threat guy.

I saw him last year a good bit. He can run it when needed, but not like Green did quickness wise.

Also took poor tackling angles.

Whether power read or inside zone, we were taking the back in the first half and giving Green a pull read. Once we started making him give the ball, things changed. There was a time or two he got greedy and misread the EMOL b/c he predetermined that he wanted to keep it, but that got him tackled for a loss.

Branch is going to kill us if we don’t get safety’s that can tackle back there

This makes me nervous for having to face LaNorris Sellers later this year, but then, they were able to bottle up LaNorris Sellers pretty well last year, so hopefully Golding will be able to do the same this year. That, and Sellers appears to have done a good job bottling up himself against Vandy tonight as well.

Our ends simoly aren’t Athletic enough to handle a QB like that. Maybe Arkansas is legit but our DL struggled tonight

Good point. We have issues with alignment on d. We made a few plays just too easy for them as we weren't in a position to make Play as we were out of it from the start/snap. Credit Petrino some but I saw of this last week against UK. D has some work to do !!!!!

When playing the RPO as a DL and you have the mesh point in front of you what is the protocol? all night tonight we took the RB as standard protocol and Green rolled out for chunk yardage. I thought the standard operating procedure for the first arriving tackler was to blow up the “mesh point” so that whoever is keeping the ball they will still be affected by the potential tackler. I could be very wrong though so I wanted to ask you @BillyEmbody As always thanks & GOD Bless

Great question. I am not sure how Ole Miss coaches it, but that's how most coaches coach it. I'll ask someone who knows what they thought about some of the contain/RPO issues Ole Miss faced with Green. Will be interested to hear their take. Perkins bit on it a few times as well.
