Feeling Mixed about Trey Burke's Number being Retired...

First let me cool the temperature of any responses by saying that he absolutely deserves it! My issue is how do we justify him going up over several other players: 1. The fab five triumvirate of Chris Webber, Jalen Rose and Juwan - They were a generational team that changed college basketball. Webb was a #1 pick and had a hall of fame NBA career. Jalen and Juwan had incredibly long and productive NBA careers. - Jalen has excelled in media and broadcasting and has represented our alma mater incredibly well - Juwan literally came back to finish his degree while playing for the Wizards to fulfill his promise to his late grandma and was the first player to sign a $100M NBA contract - The payments that Webb took are rendered as BS in my view due to this current NIL environment, schools have been raking in millions so the kids should have always been paid. Legends like John Wooden and Mike Shefeschki just did a better job of hiding their pay to play machines - Juwan gets a slight bump for the way his coaching ended but we are not retiring his number based on playing - I say the these three should be retired together and should have been ahead of Trey 2. Rumeal Robinson - He was the floor general on a championship team - His off the court issues don't taint his accomplishments for me - He should be ahead of Trey, joining his championship teammate Glen Rice - If it were me I would also include Loy Vaught, Terry Mills and Mark Hughes and just retire the key players from the 89 championship 3. Gary Grant - This one is close, but Gary still holds the all time records for steels and assists and was a Big 10 player of the year - Was a lock down defender and probably the best two way player in Michigan history - Also played all four years so he had a longer legacy - Averaged 21 and 7 assists his senior year winning big ten POY I could make and argument for Roy Tarpley who was a dominant big man averaging 19 and 10 boards his junior year and was a number 7 pick and dominant NBA big before drugs and alcohol derailed his career, so I won't put him above Trey. By the way all the above from my perspective assumes that the jersey's get retired but new players can wear the number without permission.

I have been saying this that Burke's jersey should have waited. My next three to retire are Campy Russell, Rickey Green and Gary Grant. Then the Fab Five (Webber, Rose and Howard are deserving. Not the other 2). I might consider Tarpley as well. Not sure about Rumeal. Then Burke. Then Mo Wagner.

Gary Grant, Rickey Green, and Campy Russell all deserve it. Grant isn't close for me. He absolutely should be up there. "No" on Rumeal for now.

Burke was NPOY and was a huge part in resurrecting the program and getting us back to where we are today in the basketball landscape. The Fab Five fallout set the program back decades.

The 'Fab Five' didn't do anything. The only player involved in the Martin loans was Webber. And as they did with Burgergate and Signgate, the university mismanaged the incident and dragged it out. It should have been a blip.

Not their fault.

Burke absolutely deserves it but I'd prefer they do the older guys first. I guess they will wait until everyone is dead. Michigan basketball has a disconnected and chaotic history despite periods of great success. Seeing Rickey Green and Gary Grant honored would mean a lot to those men and the guys that played with them, I'm sure.

Great point, a flex would have been to retire all three of our top point guards in program history at the same time

Michigan’s Tim McCormick referenced Grant as a no brainer that should have had the jersey up their prior to Burke.

Didn't I read that Cazzie's was the only number actually "retired"? The other guys are just being "honored" and their numbers can still be used right?

There should also be some meaningful way to memorialize John Beilien. Perhaps name the Crisler Center court in his honor.

I'd retire the #5.....for Jalen AND for the Fab Five as a whole.

I would say Grant, Rickey Green, and Campy are give or take a smidge, as worthy as Burke. I don't care about Fab 5 and jerseys. If so, I would just say Webber. I do care deeply about their banners being backup.

I hear you on Burke....he absolutely and unequivocally deserves it, but there are certainly some older players that are deserving and being passed up for his jersey retirement. It's kind of a bad look, but still well deserved for Trey

Gary Grant 100 percent should have his number retired

Burke's number is not being retired. It is going in the rafters with Cazzie Russell, Rudy Tomjanovich, Phil Hubbard, Glen Rice, and Bill Buntin. Only Cazzie's is officially retired.

I don’t like retiring numbers. Put their names in a ring of honor or something. To say no one can ever where number __ again because of the legacy of a former player? Weird.

The official term is 'jersey retirement'. The number is NOT retired. Number retired: 33 Cazzie Russell Jerseys retired (number still available): Tomjanovich 45 (worn by Colton Christian) Hubbard 35 (worn by Ben Cronin) Rice 41 (has not been worn since jersey retired, but could be) Buntin 22 (worn by Caleb Houston, Duncan Robinson, Bajema) Burke 3 (currently worn by Cadeau) Hope to see (jerseys retired, not numbers): Campy Russell 20 Rickey Green 24 Gary Grant 25 Eventually: Roy Tarpley 42 Chris Webber 4 Jalen Rose 5 Juwan Howard 25 There are others but I believe the above are no brainers.

Trey was national player of the year in 2013. None of those other guys did that. That's an extremely high bar, and Burke cleared it. I am a fan of objective criteria with this stuff, so I think it makes sense (UNC, for example, has a clear set of requirements for jerseys being honored or retired). That said, someone like Grant or Webber had a more profound impact on college basketball than Burke.
