Ferentz Talk

I don't know how many more years he has left, but he sure doesn't put out any vibes that he is ready to walk away anytime soon. I hope he has a good 5 plus years left. He takes care of himself, and is as sharp as ever. Chances are slim to none that he ever gets a national title, but I would give anything to see him lead the Hawkeyes to the playoffs a time or two. I love everything he stands for, and he is as good of a coach now as he has ever been. If we can keep a majority of the staff together (Phil, Levar, Barnett, Wallace and Lester for sure), keep our stud underclassmen out of the portal and then add some quality dudes in the portal, this team can make a hell of a run over the next couple years. If Hecklinski is as good as we think he could be, have some WRs step up (I have high hopes for KJ Parker and Vander Zee), this offense should keep ascending and the defense has a ton of young talent. Last night's loss was brutal, and it doesn't feel any better today, but this program is very healthy and going 9-3 (or even 8-4) should have everyone in and around this program feeling good. What's everyone else's thoughts on Ferentz? Seems like the heat that was on him has gone away for the most part. My friends that were in the "Fire Ferentz" crowd have been very quiet this year. *A beat down of USC would maybe soften the blow of the Oregon loss*

I think it’s going to be really hard to hold on to Wallace this round. Too many openings and dominos will fall and a good chance for him to take over head role at a smaller school and work his way back to a P4

I hope KF goes 5 more years. He does look good and you are right he hasn’t lost anything on his fastball yet. They need to get the QB position to be able to throw better and more consistently and they will continue to improve. He has proven to have great culture and his teams play above their recruiting rankings for sure all doing it the right way by all accounts. If Lester sticks around I’m super optimistic about making the playoffs and having a shot at a Big 10 title. To be in the conversation for those things is all we can really ask for TBH, we aren’t a blue blood and will never be one. We don’t have a Mark Cuban ready to pony up as far as I know. Go Hawks!

He's a hell of a good coach. Last night his 3* guys hung in with the NIL giant of college football and their mercenaries. If he's going to lead Iowa to the playoffs he's going to have to get better players or figure out a way to win games like IU and Oregon and other teams that are not former B1G West members. Since the B1G West went away Iowa is 4-8 vs P4 teams that are not former members of that division. 6-0 vs former members of the West.

I wish we could get into the $20 mil per year territory for NIL. It is too bad our stud NFL guys don't pitch in anything

Exactly. But at least we can now compete with the best teams in the country

Absolutely. I mentioned this in a post prior to the Oregon game that it's not like Iowa is running with Petras or Hill behind a poor OL anymore. They have the ability to punch back on offense now. But they're going to have get some playmakers at the QB position and on the outside going forward while maintaining their OL standard. That's a tough task.

I’d like a smooth transition to on heir apparent when KF hangs it up. Wisconsin made a home run hire with Fickell at Wisconsin and he just didn’t fit the culture they had built. Seems to me Wisconsin has been a peer program (basically B1G second tier) and finding someone that fits the culture KF has built should be high on the replacement criteria.

It’s tough but not as tough as redoing the entire culture and maintaining the stability in defense and special teams you risk by getting someone else, right?

Oh no way am I suggesting Iowa "getting someone else". If my posts gave off that vibe it was unintended. I think KF and his staff are doing a hell of a job this season. Just had some tough losses and for whatever reason this team tends to shoot itself in the foot a lot. In all 3 losses unforced errors have really cost Iowa and it nearly cost them the PSU game.

If Wallace wants to be a HC he needs to leave Iowa. He needs to broaden his skill set and prepare, and there isn't anything written down giving him the job if Kirk retires.

Whatever happens, and whenever it happens, Beth Goetz seems like an AD who already has a short list, and is constantly reviewing it.

I agree. I am more in favor now than ever to handing it off to Woods or Wallace. This is a good thing we have going, and that makes more sense to me than trying to make the flash higher like we did with Alfraud.

I would also be 100% fine with Fitzgerald.

Most NIL money doesn't come from former players anywhere.

Bingo! At this stage my guess is he will hold on here in hopes he’s named the successor. Personally I think that’s a dangerous strategy. If there was ever a time he likely could easily leave for a good DC job somewhere, it would be after this season as there’s going to be a tremendous amount of coaching staff turnovers nationwide.

I feel good about his staff now. I think Lester is going to get it done. Get passing game back up to snuff. Major remaining limitation will be recruiting / NIL.

Too much at stake in the nation’s best and most competitive football conference to have a HC “learning on the job” HC plus the Iowa job WILL attract some very good experienced HCs.

Here's what I got. I get tired of this talk about just hope to be in the conversation since we're not a blue blood. It was the same thing during the BCS that we'd never compete for the top two. Then the same thing with the four team playoff that we'd rarely if ever compete. Now we hear fans saying it about a fricking 12 team playoff. Indiana says hello. Ole Miss says hello. Texas Tech says hello. Virginia says hello. Vanderbilt says hello. I get the NIL discussion, but Mark Cuban had never donated to IU athletics until after their CFP game last year.

There are no guarantees about anything in life. This includes hiring football coaches. Wisconsin it appeared hit a home run when they hired Fickell. 3years later it doesn’t look so rosy. Contrast that to the night Iowa hired Fry as its HC. When told Fry had been hired as HC, “Voice of the Hawkeyes” Jim Zabel’s immediate reaction was “Hayden Fry! who the hell is Hayden Fry?” 4 years later UIowa was Rose Bowl bound and the rest is history.

That’s better. At least you have the guts to say something rather than hide behind the laughing emoji like other clowns on here. You list some teams who also have hope. No more so than Iowa if you are being honest. Virgin and Vanderbilt are great examples, they most likely will fall short just as Iowa has this year but they have a shot and again, that’s all you can hope for if you aren’t a blue blood or have a sugar daddy. Cuban jumped to the for when Indiana caught lightning in a jar with cigneti (super fortunate wouldn’t you agree?). Ferentz is a proven winner and can get you 2 of the 3 phases needed to make it … give him time with Lester and they can make it. Why throw that away? That’s all im saying.
