Hearing(Simmons)

Heard Austin Simmons practiced today without a boot but took backup reps, not first team reps. Trinidad Chambliss took top reps.

Very strange. If he is healthy enough to practice on Thursday you would think he would get first team reps.

I agree. Curious why this would be the case

I don't try to understand the 4D chess of Lane Kiffin.

Injury or no, Simmons has made some critical mistakes in the first two games that may have given Kiffin some pause. While I think Simmons has more upside than Chambliss long term, it's possible in a game where your opponent can make you pay dearly for a giving them a short field (unlike Ga St and KY) that he may value consistency over talent for this one game. We'll see...

Make them spend time getting ready for 2qbs. Probably had to dig up some film from Trinidad to study.....good strategy.

Come on guys, you can't take everything a Coach, especially LK, say for granted. As far we know he could have just been on the sidelines throwing passes or he could have been full speed. It's called gamesmanship. If I had to bet I would say he's gonna start and he's gonna play unless he's not effective.

Glad I could make ya'll laugh. I'll be here all week! Everyone wants to believe Kiffin is playing 4D chess or whatever. If someone is getting first team reps, sometime it's just as simple as he's the likely starter. Would love to hear your explanation for why Chambliss is getting the reps?

Whoever is starting is getting first team reps.

There’s no difference on Thursday ( no contact) between first and second team reps. Most reps are against air and receivers rotate between first and second team reps.

Doubtful. Simmons being hurt/gimpy is the only reason.

Nothing in this post has anything to do with what Lane said.

I agree that if Simmons isn't injured, we're likely not having this conversation. But the facts are is he is injured and Chambliss is taking the first team reps. And as some posters pointed out earlier, if he's well enough to take 2nd team reps why isn't he taking first team reps? If I had to predict Saturday, we're going to see a mix of Simmons and Chambliss. Whatever order that takes remains to be seen.

Lane's hedging his bets. Giving Chambliss some first team reps just in case Simmons can't go Saturday. smart

Guess I missed where Chambliss has proven he’s even capable much less consistent. There is no way Kiffin is going to Chambliss unless Simmons is hobbled significantly.

Kiffin didn’t say anything though did he? Chuck may correct me but don’t think this came from Lane.

Maybe just re-incorporating him slowly or just rewarding Trinidad for taking most of the reps this week. I don't get it either

A point of consideration too is that Arkansas is likely the worst team left on our schedule (maybe UF if they tank), and becomes a question of do we risk starting Simmons and make a bad injury worse, or do we give TC a quarter and just see what happens. If TC can move the ball well against Arky’s shaky D then let AS rest, if we’re in trouble bring him in. That’s if there is doubt regarding AS being 100%.

It may be that they are hoping they can get through the game with Chambliss but will have Simmons if needed.

Probably just getting Chambliss more comfortable with the offense in case Simmons re-aggravates that ankle. Or, it could be that Simmons is going to have a shorter leash if he continues with the turnovers.

The reference to Chambliss' consistency stems from practice reports we received during fall camp that Simmons was prone to making mistakes, while Chambliss did a better job protecting the ball. Practice is all the coaches have to go on in deciding who gets to play. I agree that Simmons has more upside, and we should be getting him as much experience as possible. But Kiffin is also in the business of winning, and if he feels a healthy Chambliss who (in practice) protects the ball is a better option than the uber-talented, but injured and mistake prone Simmons for THIS particular game, then don't be shocked if Chambliss gets the nod. And the reason I emphasize THIS game with Arkansas is unlike Ga State and KY, Petrino and Co can score especially if you make it easy by giving them a short field. Which Simmons has done 3 times this season against inferior opponents. Again, my guess is we'll see a mix of the two this Saturday.

Might be a simple as limiting the amount of stress on a mending ankle and somebody has to run the offense in practice. Or maybe some other high-level coaching strategy.
