Our own Pete Nakos lists EJ Barthel as a candidate for Texas RB job

I know some idiots wouldn’t be mad if he left but this would be a loss IMO. I will admit his RB recruiting has been sub par but what he did with Emmett this year can’t be ignored. Plus he was big in landing both Mpouma and Trae Taylor. I believe this is the second time he’s been listed as a candidate by Nakos for the Texas job the last couple of years.

But but... RSS says he is terrible and should be fired... is it even possible real football coaches might know better ??

If i had a dollar for every assistant that RSS wanted fired that went on the be a damn good coach elsewhere, I'd have quite a few dollars.

He was rumored to get a look there last year or the year before, too. We upped his deal to retain him.

Yes please. Can't recruit worth a damn & hasn't developed anyone outside of EJ. Also failed to start EJ until this year when it was clear the entire time he was the best back on the roster. Shoutout Dana for making him play EJ.

They were after him last year too. We'll see if they pursue again. After coaching an all American RB, wouldn't shock me

Is he a terrible coach? No. Can DONU do better than him as a RB coach? Absolutely.

With Emmett's rise in achievement this year, schools trying to poach Barthel from us was bound to happen. Hopefully Barthel will stay put in Lincoln.

He won’t end up in a better situation than he has here. Swim with the sharks in Texas and the SEC for some extra money or play with the dolphins here in Nebraska

Really excited to see our Ives/Parker/Booth/Rule/Nelson backfield. Such a good evaluator and developer of talent.

Texas is NOT hiring EJ Barthel. This is literally a list a journalist either made up after peeking at the AA list or it was leaked by EJ’s agent to get him another raise. This is crazy. The guy hasn’t recruited a RB who's played in 3 years and he had to be brow beaten by Dana to play 21 after glueing him to the bench his entire tenure and you want to treat him like he’s a hot commodity.

Thanks JD69 - i have been beating the EJ train for a while. I think he is a very underrated coach, and i like his resume + recruiting acumen I keep saying, imagine if we paid up for Lacey. I am happy for EJ's season this year, but Lacy is another level. Hopefully we can keep EJ.

Cory Raymond, John Garrison, Donte Williams....to name a few.

To be fair, I'm still not sure what Barthel did. EJ took it upon himself to do 200 catches per day to improve this year. Barthel had nothing to do with that.

You have said the same thing about every coach for the last twenty years. You still wax nostalgic about Frank Solich. You thought Papuchis, McGuire and Els were savants. You thought Scott Frost needed more time. You still think Bo Pelini was railroaded. You were team Butler until the bitter end. Now you apparently think EJ Barthel is the best RB coach in the country because his boss made him play the guy who everyone with eyes could see was the most talented RB in his room for at least two years, and his prized recruit thus far are probably Connor Booth(sp) and a kid he plucked out of an east coast prep school who I don’t believe had any other major offers.

Who hated Cory Raymond? I remember there was a lot of butthurt here when he left for LSU and the board was almost in full blown panic mode when rumors started swirling that Donte Williams was going back to the west coast.

I do find it interesting he was integral in landing a 4 star QB and OT but can’t sign anything of substance at RB. Are we just not willing to pony up the money for a high school RB so he is left reaching for guys?

Barthel is tough to evaluate. Did wonders with EJ, but now that room is an absolute dumpster fire with very little hope in sight...for now.

I don’t remember a lot of smoke with people wanting those guys fired. Garrison maybe, I don’t think so but don’t really remember.

Barthel has done a nice job, no real complaints from me. I’m to the point where I just want some continuity on the staff. I’m tired of the revolving door of coaches.

To be more fair EJ gives him a lot of credit for his improvement and I doubt most of you feel that way if Lacy was at NU and I believe that came down to $$$. Barthel needs to stay imho him going to Texas puts some risk in the 2027 class and to see if he can help recruit and develop some of the RB’s post EJ. But that’s just my opinions

I'll give you the recent commits.. but It was clear as glass 2 years ago that Emmett was the best back down there. They just got caught up in the stars. I knew when he got yards with Heinrich at QB he was special. The 1st man always misses....and there were a lot with that line play. Makes me wonder what other 'misses' are going on. Definitely one with Guthrie.. he's terrible on the field.
