The question I keep seeing is: Who will we get if or when we move on from Mike Norvell? It's 2025, and FSU football is falling short of competing with programs in our own neighborhood—not just in the ACC. We spend big money on head coaches but, for the most part, don’t get big results. I’m tired of it, and I’m sure you are too.
Here’s my proposal: eliminate the head coach position. Hear me out. Norvell is under contract for over $10 million a year. Instead of paying one person that much, let’s make both our coordinators the highest-paid in the country and hire the best special teams coordinator in the nation. For recruiting and player evaluation, hire a CEO/GM—personally, I’d prefer Jimbo Fisher. Each coordinator would have total control over their side of the ball.
You might ask, “What about crucial in-game decisions?” Great question, because this is where it gets fun and revolutionary: we, the fans, make the decisions. On 4th and 8, a real-time fan vote decides whether to punt or go for it. If we’re down by 7 with a minute left, we decide whether to kick the extra point or go for the win after our top-paid offensive coordinator schemes a touchdown. Only season ticket holders would get voting access, and for road games, we’d bring 11 season ticket holders to vote.
The money we’d save on a head coach—who often can’t recruit well and makes head-scratching in-game decisions—could be used to land the best quarterback and offensive line in the country. FSU would become the talk of college football, and kids love the next big thing (or whatever they call it these days). Some school will try this eventually, so we should jump on it first.
This is my first draft of the proposal and needs some tinkering, but I think it’s crazy enough to work.
