Top OC/QB Combos

There's a lot of talk about bringing in a new OC this offseason, and having him bring his QB along. While I'm not sure that Belichick doesn't try going the familiar route of hiring an OC (Brian Daboll, or Bill O'Brien, for example), here's a list of some of the top rated QBs (via PFF) with eligibility remaining and their OC: (Note: I'm omitting some obvious choices, such as Brian Hartline and Julian Sayin at OSU)
  • Drew Mestemaker (QB) and Jordan Davis (OC) at UNT - Davis is an Air Raid coach, and I just don't see Belichick ever adopting that style of offense, but I'll include him anyway.
  • Jack Layne (QB) and Luke Schleusner (OC) at New Mexico - Schleusner came to UNM this year from Idaho, where he was OC/QB coach for three years.
  • Anthony Colandrea (QB) and Corey Dennis (OC) at UNLV - Dennis is in his first year at UNLV, coming from Tulsa where was QB coach and Passing Game Cooridantor. We're all aware of Colandrea from his UVA days.
  • Colton Joseph (QB) and Kevin Decker (OC) at ODU - Decker is in his 3rd season as OC/QB coach at ODU. Previously, he was at Fordham.
  • Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele (QB) and Brian Harsin (OC) at Cal - Harsin was fired as Auburn's HC in 2022, and took a break before coming back to be OC at Cal this year.
  • Demond Williams Jr. (QB) and Jimmie Dougherty (OC) at Washington - Can we steal from them again? Dougherty was promoted to OC from PGC/QB coach last season. He followed Fisch to Washington from Arizona. The interest wrinkle here is Fisch and Washington's connection to the Belichicks.
  • Dylan Lonergan (QB) and Will Lawing (OC) at Boston College - This one is very interesting, as Lawing was previously an OA at Alabama under Saban, then TE coach under Belichick the year he was let go from the Patriots (2023) before following Bill O'Brien to BC to be OC/TE coach. The obvious glaring problem here is that he's never been an QB coach. Honestly, I think it's just as likely that Bill O'Brien is the guy to look at here instead of Lawing. I could 100% see a scenario where O'Brien is fired as HC at BC, and brought here to be our OC/QB coach with Lawing as his TE coach.
  • Jaylen Raynor (QB) and Keith Heckendorf (OC) at Ark State - Some obvious UNC and North Carolina connections here
I'm not sold that any of the above guys are the answer, or even real possibilities. If we're going big game hunting in the portal for a QB, it's likely none of the guys listed above. This is all just food for thought and discussion.

What about Petrino and Green from Arkansas.

I think a snowball has a better chance in hell but the Washington duo is the dream.

I'll go ahead and say it. I think it'll be a mistake to go after Lagway & Sellers. I think the only way that could work is if we land a great OC

BOB isn't being fired at BC after two seasons based on record. It would take a scandal which would then eliminate him from other jobs for a bit.

I'm pretty certain Taylen Green runs out of eligibility this season.

I agree with you. You have to really build them back up. Reminds me of Jackson Arnold and Carson Beck.

I think BoB lasts another year at BC, but if he does get fired, I think he becomes the betting favorite

Bobby Petrino would be high comedy here. I can’t imagine his personality working with Belichick’s. He sure can coach offense though…

Thought about it, but excluded Jason Beck. He has purely Mormon ties going back to his playing days at BYU. He was a coach at UVA under Bronco Mendenhall, and followed Anae to Syracuse after, then back to Mendenhall at New Mexico and now under Whittingham at Utah.

That's a good list, but I don't think Corey Dennis calls plays at UNLV. He has the title, but he's Urban Meyer's son in law and Urban and Dan Mullen are close

Would an OC come here for a one year gig?

That QB looks like the real deal. Doubt we see it under BB, but if you arent going to have an elite passer, just spam the QB run. in college... it's near unstoppable.

What about Charlie Weiss Jr and Austin Simmons from Ole Miss once Lane leaves for LSU or Florida? That’s a long shot haha

The only non-negotiable demand any respectable OC should have with us is to bring their own QB coach, or at the very least, literally anyone else.

If Lane were to leave, Golding is expected to be a contender to take over as HC. I could see Weiss following Lane to Florida/LSU IF he gets passed over by Ole Miss.

Sellers I can agree, he can’t do anything on time inside the pocket. Latest has every tool you want, BUT we’d need a really good OC/QB coach like (Dabol)

Another interesting OC to track is Andy Kotelnicki at Penn State, previously at Kansas and Buffalo, though Grunkemeyer at QB isn't exactly tearing it up for the Nittany Lions after Allar went down.

Petrino was Lombardi's pick to be HC of the Raiders but Al Davis went with Art Shell.

I did not know that, I can’t imagine he would be a fit here, but maybe he would be.

Like most coaches it would probably come down to who he had at QB. Saban is still mad at the medical staff at Miami who talked him out of Drew Brees.
