From conversations, it doesn’t sound like John Cohen is afraid to make a midseason move if it comes to that with Hugh Freeze. But, it doesn't sound like we're there yet. Would another loss at Arkansas change that? It's certainly possible.
Sources indicate that influential boosters and members of the board are not fully aligned on what the next steps should be at this very moment.
Key questions are being discussed behind the scenes:
— Is everyone prepared to pay the buyout?
— Should Freeze be allowed to stay if he hands full control of the offense to a new coordinator, the same way he allows DJ Durkin to run the defense?
— Would Durkin serve as interim head coach if a change is made? (Probably.)
— And could Durkin be a legitimate candidate for the permanent job if it opens? (Probably.)
— What role does officiating in the OU and Georgia games factor into viewing Freezes job status? Sources have indicated Cohen and others do believe incredibly unfortunate and impactful calls are worth taking into account. It’s simply one variable.
There are boosters with influence and BOT members that aren’t ready to fire Freeze.
Those are some of the conversations happening right now among Auburn’s decision-makers. I don’t believe any option is off the table right now.
So, we wait.
