Four-star safety Joenel Aguero transferred to IMG Academy at the start of the calendar year, enrolling after winter break and stating that he will finish his high school career in Florida.

He did play his junior season at IMG but he won’t finish his high school career at the school.

Aguero tweeted Tuesday that he will be returning to Danvers (Mass.) St. John’s Prep, where he went for his first year-and-a-half of high school, for his senior campaign.

The Massachusetts native is the No. 31 prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

IMG — which is 9-0 on the season — has an absolutely star-studded secondary this season.

There are three future Power Five safeties in the 2022 class alone in consensus four-star Trevon Howard, four-star Clemson commit Keon Sabb and consensus five-star Kamari Wilson. The roster also features Clemson commit and On300 five-star Daylen Everette and three-star Michigan State commit Ade Willie at cornerback.

But even with such a talented defensive backfield, Joenel Aguero has carved out a big role for himself.

His performance against Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage in August caught the attention of On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power.

“The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder did not start the game but ended up playing the majority of the contest in IMG’s back half. Aguero’s athleticism and burst jumped off the screen,” Power said. “On one play, he closed a 10- to 15-yard gap and nearly annihilated the opposing quarterback as he was sliding.”

Joenel Aguero is down to 10 schools

Joenel Aguero released his top 10 schools at the end of October. They are Alabama, Boston College, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Miami, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Penn State.

“I picked these schools because these are the schools that have been recruiting me the hardest,” Aguero told On3’s Hayes Fawcett. “I feel like I can come into any of these programs and make a big impact.”

The safety might even be close to making a decision, at least according to something he tweeted last month.
