The ACC bounced back after a tough first weekend

In week two, ACC teams went a combined 11-3. Only Syracuse, NC State, and Florida State lost, while every other team in action came away victorious. Coming out of week one, the conference was a combined 7-7, a mediocre .500 winning percentage.

ESPN’s Paul Finebaum was concerned about the conference entering week two.

“As you go through that league, Virginia Tech has the only really quality win I would say. And that was against North Carolina,” Finebaum said after week one on SportsCenter. “Some of the losses were just inexplicable. Duke losing to Charlotte Friday night. What about Georgia Tech losing to Northern Illinois? I’m not laughing at the other schools because both programs are good. But if you’re in the ACC and you’re trying to prop that league up, which ultimately means a lot for a school like Clemson, you have really an impossible task right now.”

Clemson lost in week one to Georgia and did not score an offensive touchdown. The Tigers played much better on Saturday against Middle Tennessee, winning 35-14. Miami narrowly survived an upset to unranked Appalachian State, squeaking out a 25-23 victory behind a late field goal. North Carolina also came back with a strong performance following week one’s loss to Virginia Tech. The Tar Heels dominated Georgia State 59-17.

Syracuse lost a low-scoring battle to Rutgers 17-7. NC State saw major struggles against Mississippi State, losing 24-10. One of the nation’s biggest upsets of the weekend was Jacksonville State beating Florida State. The Seminoles struggled and fell 20-17 to their FCS opponent.

Clemson is the highest ranked ACC team in the latest AP Top 25 Poll, sitting at No. 6. Virginia Tech (15), North Carolina (21), and Miami (24) also made the top 25 coming out of week two.
