ACC Tournament picture comes into focus for FSU men's, women's basketball

As the ACC men’s and women’s basketball tournaments approach it the coming days, one Florida State team knows what its path will look like while the other’s picture is coming into focus.

The FSU women learned Sunday evening, after their regular-season finale against Duke, that they will be the No. 4 seed in this week’s tournament in Greensboro.

As a top-four seed, Brooke Wyckoff’s Seminoles will receive a double-bye and not have to play until this Friday in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals. They will take on the winner of No. 5 seed North Carolina vs. the winner of a first-round game between Boston College and Syracuse.

That quarterfinal showdown is scheduled to be played on Friday at 11 a.m.

The Florida State men’s basketball team, meanwhile, won’t know its ACC Tournament schedule until later this week.

With two games remaining, the Seminoles are tied with two other schools — Pitt and Virginia — in 10th place with 7-11 records in league play. Cal, Notre Dame and Syracuse are right behind that group with 6-12 ACC records.

Fifteen of the ACC’s 18 schools will make the men’s field, and Florida State is guaranteed of being one of those 15.

If the Seminoles win both of their final two regular-season games — Tuesday at Virginia and Saturday against visiting SMU — they could still earn a first-round bye and not have to play until Wednesday, March, 12. If Florida State finishes seeded 10th through 15th, the ‘Noles will open play in Charlotte on Tuesday, March 11.

While the FSU women are a lock to play in the NCAA Tournament, the men would need to win the ACC Tournament to earn a bid. This will be the Seminoles’ final campaign under head coach Leonard Hamilton, who announced earlier this year he will resign when this season ends.
