Arizona State will have a different starting quarterback when it faces Fresno State Saturday night.

Freshman Jaden Rashada, who started the first two games for the Sun Devils, is expected to miss the game against Fresno State due to an injury, sources tell On3.

Junior Trenton Bourguet is expected to get the start for Arizona State, per sources. Notre Dame transfer Drew Pyne is also now back healthy and available after being sidelined for the first two games due to a hamstring injury he sustained during fall camp.

Rashada, who ranked as the sixth-best quarterback and 73rd-best overall prospect in the 2023 recruiting class according to the On3 Industry Ranking, threw for 403 yards with three touchdown passes and one interception in the Sun Devils’ first two games.

He was 18 of 31 for 236 yards with two touchdown passes during a season-opening win over Southern Utah. He was then 16 of 29 for 167 yards with one touchdown pass and one interception during a 27-15 loss to Oklahoma State last week.

“Jaden has done such a phenomenal job,” ASU head coach Kenny Dillingham said. “You watch him play in the football games. He has one turnover in two games. He steps up in the pocket, gets hit in the face and delivers throws. The growth he’s made in those two games are incredible, absolutely incredible. So I really could not be more pleased with how he’s pleased. We’ve got to be able to adapt to the situation we’re in at other positions, adapt, change and be creative. But I’ve been so pleased with how Jaden has played. There’s no doubt his future is extremely, extremely, extremely bright.”

Bourguet made five starts for the Sun Devils last season. He threw for more than 345 yards in three of those games and finished the season with 11 touchdown passes.

Pyne, who was the favorite to win the starting QB job for Arizona State before suffering the preseason injury, started the final 10 games of the regular season for Notre Dame last season prior to transferring to the Sun Devils.

Fresno State is a three-point favorite heading into the matchup against ASU. The Bulldogs are 2-0 after a season-opening win over a Power Five opponent (Purdue) and a double overtime victory last week over an FCS opponent (Eastern Washington).

Fresno is on an 11-game winning streak dating back to last season, which the Bulldogs finished with nine straight victories after a 1-4 start to the year.
