Auburn transfer DL Brenton Williams commits to Liberty

Auburn transfer defensive lineman Brenton Williams has committed to Liberty. This comes 10 days after Williams entered his name into the transfer portal.
Williams departs from the Auburn program following just one season on The Plains, appearing in just two games in his freshman year last season for the Tigers where he recorded zero stats.
Williams was a three-star prospect out of Opelika High School in Alabama, where he was ranked the No. 863 overall player and No. 94 defensive lineman in the country for the 2023 recruiting cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
The 6-foot-3, 245-pound pass rusher provides physicality and speed off of the edge on the defensive line, playing the buck position on Auburn’s defense. In high school as a senior Williams recorded 55 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 4.0 sacks, also lettering in basketball after being ranked as one of the 40 football players in the state by On3.

Liberty football on the rise
Last year was the first season of the Jamey Chadwell era at Liberty. Following the departure of Hugh Freeze — who left for Auburn after the 2022 season — Chadwell took over and hit the ground running. Liberty went 13-0 in the regular season but then suffered its first loss of the season in the Fiesta Bowl.
Last year’s Fiesta Bowl marked the fifth straight bowl game the Flames had made as a program. Liberty is 3-2 in those five bowl games.
