Behren Morton injury update: Texas Tech QB leaves game after lineman falls on ankle

Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton left Saturday’s contest against Kansas with an apparent ankle injury. Morton suffered the injury in the second quarter after a Jayhawks lineman rolled up on his ankle during a sack.
The QB was in clear pain as he limped to the sidelines and attempted to jog it off. However, he was eventually taken back to the locker room with a frustrated look on his face just before halftime as backup Will Hammond entered for him.
Prior to his exit, Morton was 7-of-12 passing for 91 yards and a touchdown. Hammond has already thrown an interception after entering the game for him, and the Red Raiders are clinging to a 21-17 lead at halftime.
The Red Raiders were up 21-0 at the time that Morton left with injury but allowed KU to score 17 unanswered points to close out the first half. FOX Sports sideline reporter Alexa Landestoy provided an update coming out of halftime, saying Morton would not return to the game. The QB was caught on camera wearing street clothes.
“This game completely flipped when Behren left,” she said. “I’m getting word from Texas Tech he will not return so it will be Will Hammond the rest of the way. Behren was on the sidelines before he left with the trainers, walking up and down and trying to see if he could put pressure on that right leg and shaking his head in disappointment. So Morton is out for the rest of this one.”

This isn’t the first time that Morton has gone down with injury this season. He also left a game in September against Utah due to an upper body injury. Hammond also stepped in for him in that contest and led the Red Raiders to a 34-10 victory while throwing for 169 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.
After a shaky end to the first half against Kansas, Hammond was able to run one in for a touchdown in the third quarter to increase the Texas Tech lead. As of this writing, Texas Tech held a 35-17 lead with 7:18 remaining in the fourth quarter.
It looks as if the Red Raiders will hang on for the win in spite of the injury to Morton, and we’ll see exactly how serious it is in the next few days. Texas Tech takes on Arizona State in Week 8 and will hope Behren Morton can be available.
