BYU social media trolls Texas, Steve Sarkisian while making case for College Football Playoff berth
BYU took a swing at Texas coach Steve Sarkisian for comments he made Friday regarding the Longhorns’ deservingness of making the College Football Playoff. Following a win against No. 3 Texas A&M, Sarkisian stated that it would be “a disservice to our sport if Texas did not make the CFP.
The Cougars defeated UCF by a score of 41-21 on Saturday to finish the regular season 11-1 and clinch a spot in the Big 12 Championship game. So the social media team decided to have some fun, copying Sarkisian’s quote into their tweet of the final score.
BYU now has an opportunity to reach the playoff with an automatic bid if it beats Texas Tech in the Big 12 title game. However, with their tweet, the Cougars seem to be insinuating they believe they should be in either way while also taking a shot at Sarkisian.
The current College Football Playoff rankings have BYU well ahead of Texas, coming in at No. 11 compared to No. 16. There’s little reason to believe that the Longhorns’ win, although impressive, would be enough to jump them into the playoff at all, let alone ahead of the Cougars.
In fact, the road for BYU to make it in as an at-large team is murky as is. The Cougars would actually be the first team out of the field according to the current rankings despite being inside the top 12. This is because automatic bids would be rewarded to two conference champions below them from the ACC and the highest ranked Group of 5 champion.

Texas will finish the regular season with a record of 9-3. Notably, a three-loss team has never made the College Foootball Playoff in its history. BYU will finish 11-1, but has the No. 28 strength of schedule in the country compared to No. 5 for Texas.
If BYU does end up losing in the Big 12 Championship game, perhaps Texas could jump ahead of the Cougars. BYU has only one win against teams currently ranked in the top 25 compared to three for Texas, so it will be interesting to see how the committee factors in quality of opponents against overall record.
But either way, Texas has more than just BYU in front of it, and that will make it even more difficult to find a path into the CFP. We’ll wait and see how far the Longhorns jump when the next set of rankings are announced on Tuesday.
