As he weighed his next steps following the SEC Championship, Carson Beck ultimately decided to leave Georgia. Rather than declaring for the NFL Draft, he entered the transfer portal and committed to Miami as the top transfer this cycle.

With training camp on the horizon, Beck spoke with ESPN’s Andrea Adelson about his decision to transfer from Georgia. He cited a “shelf life” he thought was expiring, which led him to seek a change of scenery.

Beck arrives at Miami as the No. 1-ranked player to enter the transfer portal this offseason, according to the On3 Industry Transfer Rankings. All the while, he was working his way back from injury. As he did so, he thought the time was right to move on, and he eventually landed in Miami.

“Everything has a shelf life, and I think the shelf life there [at Georgia] was over, and it was just time to start something new, to get into a new program, to start a new chapter of my life, my career,” Beck told ESPN at ACC Media Days.

Carson Beck: Miami transfer ‘one of the better decisions I’ve made’

Carson Beck became Georgia’s starting quarterback in 2023 and put together a huge season. He completed 72.4% of his passes for 3,941 yards and 24 touchdowns, to six interceptions, that year. He then ran it back, but had an up-down go as he completed 64.7% of his passes for 3,485 yards and 28 touchdowns, to 12 interceptions.

Beck also suffered an arm injury in the final seconds of the first half during the SEC Championship and later required surgery. Although the NFL presented an option, he chose to enter the portal and commit to Miami, and he praised that decision during his press conference Tuesday in Charlotte.

“I think the biggest thing for me, obviously, was the offensive fit,” Beck said. “As a quarterback, the OC, the scheme, the talent and guys that you’re going to have around you is huge to the success and ultimately, the future A, of a quarterback, but of me. This is my future and I think this decision is one of the better decisions I’ve made.

“Since I’ve been in here in January and developing the relationships and building the chemistry with me, the wide receivers, the running backs, the tight ends, the o-line. Just trying to develop those relationships and that camaraderie, it just reinforced my decision in a positive way. I’m really excited to keep working with these guys.”
