CBS Sports updated its top 25 and 1 basketball rankings as January came to a close. Purdue remained the top team in the country according to the latest edition.

“Simply put, unless there’s some Associated Press Top 25 voter out there who values something more this deep into a season than he or she values a team’s body of work, Matt Painter’s program should be the unanimous No. 1 when the AP poll updates later Monday,” Gary Parrish wrote for CBS Sports.

“But, at this point, there’s really no intelligent argument for anybody other than Purdue being No. 1 considering Purdue is 7-1 in Quadrant 1 with wins over Gonzaga, Marquette and Duke — and a lone loss to Rutgers by a single point. Kansas is the only school with more Quadrant-1 wins than Purdue — but the Jayhawks have four losses on their resume, among them a 23-point loss at home to TCU.”

Other teams have an argument, such as Alabama or Kansas State. But since the Boilermakers were that close to an undefeated record at this point of the season, it is Purdue at the top.

Houston was another that was just on the outside looking in, as well as Tennessee. The Volunteers beat Texas over the weekend.

Speaking of the Longhorns, they remained within the top 10, per CBS Sports, despite the loss.

“They play super physical and they kind of foul every time and that kind of gets me going,” star Zach Edey said, who scored 22 points after halftime, via Gold and Black. “I like playing physical, I like playing those types of games. I kind of got going when they started fouling me, started hacking me and started doing things. They busted my lip in the second half. Those things got me going a little bit.”
