Chauncey Bowens injury update: Kirby Smart provides latest on Georgia's top rusher

Georgia was without running back Chauncey Bowens for much of its contest against Auburn on Saturday, limiting the running game quite a bit. Bowens was dealing with a calf injury.
Coach Kirby Smart provided an update on Bowens’ status on Wednesday on an SEC teleconference call with reporters. The news is positive.
“He’s been fine. He’s done everything,” Smart said. “I mean he did everything last week, but it was kind of nagging him. But he was available. But he’s done everything this week.”
Chauncey Bowens is the team’s leading rusher so far this season, though the load has been shared quite a bit overall. He has run 60 times for 315 yards and four touchdowns. He’s also caught eight passes for 42 yards.
There’s no doubt, though, that Georgia missed him against Auburn. He played just 11 snaps.
With Chauncey Bowen hobbled, Georgia managed a season-low 79 rushing yards. The previous season low was 180 yards, so it was a huge difference for the program.
“It was not the running game that we’ve had in the past,“ Smart said on Saturday. ”And theirs was, right? So, we showed them the stat that eight of the last 10 Auburn-Georgia games were won by the team that rushed the ball more. And that wasn’t the case tonight. I still think we’ve got a good running team, a good stop-the-run team. I think they had a really good plan. Some of their rushing yards were perimeter things, rockets we call them. And that hurt us. It wasn’t direct runs.”

Chauncey Bowens, Georgia ready for Ole Miss
Getting ready for a showdown with unbeaten Ole Miss, Georgia will certainly feel the pressure. But if Chauncey Bowens is back, the Bulldogs will feel good about their chances.
“Our guys are excited again to be in another great matchup,” Smart said. “Seems like we’ve had a ton of these in terms of last couple years. The SEC provides the ability to play in these big matchups. But our guys are excited. We’re a little beat up, but you know everybody is this time of year.”
Smart had praise for Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin, who will be interested in the update on Chauncey Bowens provided Wednesday. The Georgia head coach expanded.
“Lane has done an incredible job with his team, their program,” he said. “Their ability to replace good players. I mean, to me, they’ve upgraded at a lot of positions even from last year. And their quarterback’s playing at a really high level and their defense is wreaking havoc, so they’re going to be a really tough matchup for us but we’re excited to play at home and we’re looking forward to having a great turnout and a great atmosphere.”
